Post by Missmid80 Sun Aug 20 2017, 23:23

Hi, I have just given a 6 month staff pup a forever home. My last dog (Ernie)was with me 12 yrs he was my baby. He was an active basset hound who left a huge gap in our family dynamics, but after 2 years my daughters and I were ready for a puppy and last Tuesday Sam arrived bold and boisterous! He had been with the family we had him from since he was a baby, never walked, going to the toilet in a cage biting at anyone who went near him, he had never been anywhere on a lead

Hi & Welcome to the Forum from Flo and me Big Grin

First off.... Thank you, you've given a loving home to a very neglected Staffy. We are here to offer every support on giving your new furbaby a fresh start.

It's going to take time for readjustment but Staffies are very quick to learn what's good for them. You'll need to gain his confidence and reassure him in the first few days, offer him praise at every opportunity and ignore the bad things, the idea being that you reward good as they really don't understand what's bad.

Your little one is young and has a lot to learn still, least most that life isn't within a cage and by the sounds of things he's fallen on his paws with you Smile

Thank you, we have been working with a clicker and doggy treats which he has taken to with unbelievable intelligence, the first walk I carried him back hanging off his lead, a few trial and testing with all types of leads and collars we have successfully taken a good walk with him, I don't like cages and he will have free run of the home but for the time being I've had to put him in a cage so my 9yr old daughter doesn't get scared he has hidden springs in his paws and a bite that hurts even tho he's playing, we are using the ignore technique folding our arms and turning our back it works for a few minutes then he goes full on into crazy jumping we will get there, I am so glad I found this site I've already gained so many tips

Welcome from Misty and I. Your story sounds very similar to mine, we got misty at 14 months, she had never been walked as she was ' hyper' she spent a lot of time in a cage. Like you we don't use cages either. Walking was very stressful for us and her as because she wasn't used to the world everything terrified her. We got her spayed and in adult training classes which we still go to now and she is a wonderful joy to us.

It's lovely to hear of a rescue story, you have got a wonderful addition to the family x

What a sad start Sam has had, it sounds like he has found a loving home now though. Keep us updated on how things go and pictures of Sam are a must Smile
