Re: Hey people, food question...
Bakers is pants because of all the additives and all the stuff mixed in with it that quite frankly a dog doesn't need. Its made to appear more appealing to a human, and with it being a well known food, peaople assume its good.
I feed mine James Wellbeloved, here's a link that might be of interest

You could also try feeding raw, possiably the best diet, and I've never heard of a full bowl there. Doesn't suit me but worth a thought Xx

Have a look at these sites about raw feeding...
http://www.rawmeatybones.com/petowners/whatisrmb.php
http://www.krisannriorawfeeding.com/whyfeedraw.htm
http://rawfeddogs.net/
They are all pretty similar, although there are differences between them.
NEVER feed your dog a cooked bone - they can become extremely brittle & can produce sharp, stiff, needle-like splinters. Raw bones (not the weight bearing or marrow bones) are much more 'bendy' and are very easily digested.

Re: Hey people, food question...
I too feed raw and it is great. Pet store bones aren't the same as raw bones as most are cooked at the pet store. Mine does the best on chicken leg quarters (also turkey works well). They are inexpensive and a good mix of bone and meat. Where cooked chicken bones should never be given to dogs, raw ones are fine. I used to think it was a fad, but after trying it out myself, I don't think I will ever feed any other way. I have even tried at some freeze dried mix for when we travel so I don't have to pack an additional ice chest! Can't say enough good about feeding raw. I wouldn't think you would have to worry about the runs if you transition properly. It can lead to increased begging though when you are preparing your own meals...

Re: Hey people, food question...
I too also feed raw to Milo, he it, we him loving it! He's almost 9 1/2 months old, been fed BARF since he was about 5 1/2 months old I think and the very picture of health. My fil feeds it to his 3 dogs and I confess we thought it was a bit nuts but when he explained his reasons it made perfect sense. I was really up for it but dh wasn't totally convinced on doing it full time, I ignored him and did it MY way lol.....but he is now a walking advert lol!
I would personally really recommend giving it a go, it is after all a much more natural and real diet for a dog when you stop and think about it for a mo. x ps congrats. on your new dog, so glad she's found a lovely home.

Re: Hey people, food question...
I think what makes it worthwhile for me, apart from Dempsey being healthy & having a lovely coat, is the way he tucks into his meals every day, always eager to finish the last piece!
However, it must be said that it isn't for everybody, or every dog.

I have a quick 30min time window to walk her before work at 6.30am, I then rush to work. Pay a dog walker to have her in the afternoon, get home from work at 5.30, usually out again, unless mum/friend has her. Have a very small freezer as I live in an appartment, and haven't a garden just carpets.
So doesn't suit me.

Re: Hey people, food question...
My girl used to get just dry food (its Wagg) and she used to gobble it in seconds then chase the others away for theirs but since they died she stopped eating it and won't eat just dry and will ONLY eat it with wetdog food (usually pets at home own brand) and then any veg scraps / meat from our dinners. Most dogs arent generally interested in dry foods.

Re: Hey people, food question...
After some advice on here i tried raw foods. Got some off a website off her, some from our local pet shop and some from a friend who is a butcher and who gives us raw bones for free and it didnt go down well with my dogs as there was only one who was interested in eating it and the rest just looked at me as if id gone crazy lol and just nibbled it. Kept trying them on it for about a week with still no luck and have now gone back to our burgess dog food for adults and wainwrights for the pups. The good thing that came out of it was that they seem to appreciate their dry food more now. They still love their raw bones but just dont like the meat.
My dogs are fussy lol

Re: Hey people, food question...
Have a look at "whole prey model". That's how we feed Rascal. She gets a whole lotta red meat, some liver, some offal (kidneys) and some bones (chicken usually) and a couple of times a week we give her eggs. Bones actually firm up their stools - too much bone and you get chalky poo too much offal and you get cannon butt!!
She has a beautiful coat, beautiful teeth and loads of energy. Not sure what we'd do if we couldn't feed her outside though! I know some ppl have trained their dogs to eat in the kitchen - one lady puts down a piece of plastic shower curtain, others use an old towel. We use a plastic placemat out in the yard.
I don't feed my kids processed food, so I guess I want fresh, natural food for Rascal as well. Just my own personal "philosophy" I guess

Did you buy mince?
A lot of dogs don't really like the minced stuff, but will happily tuck into large pieces of raw meat or raw chicken wings/quarters.
It should be large pieces so that they rip & tear it - that way it keeps their teeth clean!

We bought mince and large chunks of meat from the petshop
