Any advice mucho appreciated!!
Hi all, my Staffy X Piper was recently put to sleep as she suffered from Congenital heart disease, she was a gem!! We have just this week rescued an 11 month old Staffy female, we are fostering her this week to see how she gets on as we have 3 young boys, so far we have only come up against one problem, she grabs my two eldest boys who are 6 and 7's trouser legs
I really do not want to have to send her back and I'm sure this is probably easily rectified so any advice would be great!!!
Thankyou xx

Re: Any advice mucho appreciated!!
sound like they didn't test the dog right at all, you have to teach it wrong to do it and tell him off every time he does it.
Re: Any advice mucho appreciated!!
So sorry to hear about your Piper, but great on potentionally having another.
If you have the time then it really is just training and a firm 'No' and she will learn, at 11 months she is still a baby and these things take time, do you know any of her history?
I went to Battersea and was going to take this lovely lad Dexter, but he would bite/grab trouser legs too, funnily enough not mine as he somehow, in a short space of time realised he shouldn't. I think it was because I was firm with him and very confident, but he ripped my mums trouser leg. Not helpfull as she wasn't confident with dogs, wary of Staffs and was going to help me out with out him.
For this reason I couldn't have him, I worked in a social club and he/she was going to be around young children from day one.
I honestly do think with time and training you can stop him, be confident and firm, and try (easier said than done) to get the kids to be too. If you have the time you can make it happen.
Sorry for the ramble, just touched a nerve about the boy I couldn't have, but I have Moo now.Xx

Hello There,
I have just gone through the exact carry on with my pup Tia who is 9 weeks, when we first got her she did the whole grabbing trouser thing.
What we did was, the moment she grabbed someone's trouser leg we put her in the kitchen and closed the door leaving her alone for a bit then allowing her through again and kept with that cycle.
She now never ever grabs trouser legs.
I appreciate there is an age difference but worth a try.
Cheers
Mike

Hi and welcome from me and Rocky.
A firm NO should do the trick. A small reward biscuit for good behaviour worked with Rocky. He was about 18 months when we rescued him just before last Christmas. The training continues every day though. We turn our back to him for bad behaviour and reward good.
Be consistent you will get there.

Re: Any advice mucho appreciated!!
Hi & welcome.
As said above, you should be able to train this out of her with patience & consistency. Watch her body language - when you see that she's about to go for the trouser legs give her a firm "No!" and everybody should then ignore her, no interraction at all not especially no eye contact. If she carries on, then tell her "No!" again, and take her from the room. Shut the door & leave her there for a minute or two. It doesn't need to be long because she'll want your company.
Prety soon she'll realise that biting trouser legs = no fuss and not biting trouser legs = play & fun.
Good luck!

Re: Any advice mucho appreciated!!
Thanks everyone I will defo give those ideas a go, she's such a lovely dog and this is my only concern with her, funnily enough she hasn't tried it with me or my youngest son who's 2 once. He's a lot tougher than the other 2 boys lol and has already made it quite clear he's taking no nonsense from her!! Think I could have a mini Dog Whisperer on my hands!!

Re: Any advice mucho appreciated!!
Same with mine. Dempsey bites trouser legs (he's still in training even though he's over 2 years old now - he's just a wee bit thick! ), but never bites mine or my daughter's but always bites my oh & my son's!
We've got it so that, although he still attacks the trousers, as soon as he does it one of us says "No!" or "Leave it!" and he does. A bit reluctantly, it's true, but he still does it!

I will defo let you know how I get on, she's had some very basic training before somewhere, today we perfected recall to a whistle although now need to work on stop as my poor wee shins took a hammering!!
She's picking up the training I'm doing with her very quickly we've only had her 4 days so fingers crossed this gets nipped in the bud soon!! x

I'm sure it will. She probably just needs a firm touch so that she knows the boundaries. Once she understands she'll be an absolute gem, you'll see!

Re: Any advice mucho appreciated!!
Nothing to add other than everyone in the house has to be consistant all of the time. If not the dog will get confused. They catch on quickly and crave human attention so if they don't get it when they act a certain way they learn pretty quick.

Hope this helps
Try giving sharp verbal 'R, R' then when he releases praise him. pre-empt his next trouser leg assaults the same way, then give treats if dog leaves it straight away. Give him toys to play with just after the correction as this will focus him on toys instead.
