Hello & welcome.
What triggers these attacks? Is it after exercise or just randomly?

Re: my staff hyperventilates
Does it happen frequently? You could try to get it on tape so you could post it on here. It's always easier to advise if there is video. You could also show it to a vet and ask their opinion as well.

It sounds like anxiety. Watch carefully next time and see if there's anything that could have triggered it - a noise or smell for example, or even an action by someone in the family.
A vid would be a good idea, and if it gets as far as a vet's visit, it would show them exactly what you mean.

Re: my staff hyperventilates
hi this is more common in staffs than you think i had a bitch that suffered from it.its caused by a flap of skin in the dogs throat i forget the medical term for it
but apparently all dogs have it but some are born with this flap being slightly
larger than it should be,does it happen more when exercising/walking the dog or in vigorous play sessions? because the dog breathes harder, the larger flap cuts of air and the dog looks like its gagging for air and makes grunting noises
but there's nothing vets can do to solve it but my old girl lived to 13 and it didnt affect her that much,if you use a collar switch to a harness so not restricting the throat and gentle walks and play may help hope everything works out ok for you and your dog

Re: my staff hyperventilates
thanks he does do it after playing sometimes but he can be just laying there relaxing and suddenly start making this horrible noise as if he struggling to breath i just gently rub his throat and he stops, other than this he is a very healthy dog only ever had to take him to the vets once all because he chewed up a stick and cut the inside of his throat and was coughing up blood! next time he does it i will try and record it so you can all see what he does

Re: my staff hyperventilates
my previous dog ( a boxer) used to do it and there was nothing more we could do but calm him down and rub his throat... he was doing it at least few times a month for 13 years. we've never found out what was the reason, but it never really caused any serious problem, only once he couldn't 'catch his breath' for so long that he got really weak and almost collapsed but my mom managed to calm him down...
