Skin condition?
Lola has an appointment on Thursday with the vets to sort out her skin condition whatever it is.
But wanted to ask here before I go what everyone else reckons it could be.
Basically she has a lot of scabs and today I noticed she has bites on her tummy and her stomach is very red and brown.
She has nbeen riffing a lot olver the last month or so, and I can only imagine this her from her scratching.
She has been wormed and flea'd. The vet told me to use frontline every two months, but with her riffing I used the frontline a month sooner, but this hasn't helped.
She rolls in everything, so do bathe her a lot, but use a dogge shampoo.
She also rolled in paint and had to bathe her again. She had this condition before the paint roll.
I have been putting sudocrem on her, but she is getting very nervous about being examined.
I cannot get to her belly as she will attack me, she doesn't bite she just suddenly jumps as if to warn me.
I am going to muzzle her when we go to the vets so he can examine her.
I am also going to muzzle her if I have to put cream on her from the vets.
It makes me sad that she is so nervous at being touched, she had scabbs on her head and doesn't even like me touching her head now.
Any thoughts how i can get her over this.
And also what could be causing her condition.

Re: Skin condition?
Poor thing. She sounds quite distressed by it all, doesn't she?
It sounds like some sort of allergic reaction. It could be plant sap (ie cut grass etc) or insect bites. You could try giving her half a piriton tablet twice a day for a couple of days to see if it has any effect. If it is an allergic reaction, then they should help a little.

Sounds like an allergy to me as well. Hopefully the vet will help you get it sorted.

Thank you for the replies, will try the piriton and see how she goes with that and see what the vet says.

Re: Skin condition?
well found a load more lumps now, gave her some piriton.
I'm wondering if it's her food maybe. Could she be alergic to fish?
she has sardines, pilchards, eggs, bones and raw meat.

It could indeed be the food. Suki got bumps as well becuase we were feeding her something she was alergic to. We took her to a dermatologist and after her test results came back she was allergic to most everything. We have her on a vegetarian dry food now and she is noticeably better. We are going to try a few different foods and she what she responds to best. See what the vet thinks and you may just need to change her food slowly and see how it goes. Best of luck and please keep us updated.

Re: Skin condition?
Well took Lola the vets and she was golden. They she has an allergy, to what they don't know, he said it could be grass pollen.
But she had a needle and was excellent. she also has Prednisolone, Cephalexin and some body was Malaseb.
He said one of them is a steroid and that she will more than likely drink and and eat more.
The vet also said that it may reaccur, but at least she has all the meds now to soothe and sort her skin out.
Was very proud of my little girl, I didn't need the muzzle, but put it on just incase.
He also said she was having a phantom pregnancy and that the best cure was to get her spayed.
So when all her meds are done I'm going to get on that.

Re: Skin condition?
Glad to hear she is getting better and congrads on the good vet visit. When I had to get Suki's blood drawn she was uncooperative to say the least.

Re: Skin condition?
Sounbds like the same as what my dog Skibadee has, just be wary of prednisone, it has some not very nice side effects and though it will stop itching, isn't the best drug to be on long-term. We did a trial with my older dog but after reading up and speaking toa vet-nurse friend I decided to take her off them. She still itches in the summer months but we have learnt to manage it by washing her feet in an oatmeal shampoo after walks and giving her a homeopathic remedy which is meant for people but through trial and error has really helped. Its called 'New-Era' for hayfever and allergic rhinitis. Hope this helps

Re: Skin condition?
Well Lola is doing really well. she has completely stopped scratching and her skin is almost clear.
I stopped the steroids as she seemed really out of it and it worried me. still carrying on with the anti-biotics and the wash.
But all in all she seems a much happier doggy.

keep hold of the wash and any signs of it re-occuring the wash should take care of it on its own

Re: Skin condition?
If you're feeding raw, it should be fairly easy to find out if one of the meat types is to blame - just feed one type of meat at a time for a couple of weeks, and see which one she reacts to.
Dempsey can't eat poultry, although he doesn't get a rash just the runs!

Re: Skin condition?
we're still struggling with Mambo's skin allergy, it's more try and error really...
he has his ears scratched and some dry small spots on his head which are now slowly disappearing
trying different types of meat (each type for few weeks) now to see if there's any difference... can't really tell yet... but i don''t think piriton helps in his case, we tried it for a few days and didn't see much difference.
we will go to the vet probably in about two three weeks time if nothing will change. he already had a shoot of antibiotics and steroids before when he scratched his ears really badly and had a proper ear infection. it helped for a while but now it's coming back. in lighter version, but still... we're trying to get to the bottom of this finding out what it is that causes the allergy

Re: Skin condition?
Well Lola's is still on the Anit-biotics, but it's coming back. I think I will do what you said Caryll, I am going to cut out fish completely for a couple of weeks, then the eggs, then feed her one type of meat etc etc and see if i can get to the bottom of it.
I think it must be something she eats as I kept her in for 3 days.
On a lighter note, I have never seen another dog so pleased to be bathed as Lola is.
I have a toilet and bathroom in one, and she always follows me to the toilet and jumps in the bath the loon
I only have to say "come on bath time" and she is in the bath before I even get to the bathroom.

that's exactly what we're doing now. we're sure that beef is not good for Mambo. we tried rabbit for a while and his skin seemed to get better. for the last couple of days we've been feeding him chicken and added some tripe as well, unfortunately his ears got worse - swollen again and he scratches them a lot ... I'm not sure whether it's because of tripe or chicken-we won't give him any tripe in the next 7 days and see if anything changes. to relief itching we gave him a bath yesterday using anti-allergic and soothing shampoo, but i don't think it helped
it's the only way we can really work out what's bad for them: try and error... but it takes so much time
Re: Skin condition?
I have the solution. Oliver used to get bumps, scab, redness all over. The vet said it was allergies and to change his food. I found a organic pet food website that had these pills to fix the problem. They recommended using this and a fish oil pill but I just used this. I gave it to him for a couple months and now I don't even give it to him anymore and no skin problems at all.

sounds good. but it has beef in it, and we think Mambo is allergic to beef

Re: Skin condition?
yea, I found this one straight away, now just have to make sure if they ship it to the UK because I couldn't find any definite statement about this
I found another shop selling it:
http://centraldawgma.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=67
but they also don't obviously state whether they ship to the uk or not. will find out
