Skin Condition
Hi, I have a adopted a 10mth old Staffy, I have have had him for a month now. He has a bald patch on the top of his head, we thought he had maybe been rubbing it on his crate or something at his previous home. After doing research ringworm is mentioned. It gives him no problems and looks like maybe the hair could be growing back. When we first got him I took him to the vet as he was scratching his ears. He had ear mites, which, he had had for quite a while. I'm pleased to say that with medication and careful cleaning this has been rectified. I should of pointed it out to the vet, do you think that it be the results of the mites? Also, i bathed him last week and the day after he started scratching and nipping his undercarriage. I've started applying Sudocream as recommeded. As he stared scratching the next day I'm thinking its an allergic reaction, but does anyone think it could be something to do with the mites and bald patch?

Re: Skin Condition
Mites do create bald patches, generally not concentrated to one spot though, well thats my experience anyway. They tend to go thin and patchy in places. I would keep an eye on it, if it worsens then a quick visit to the vets, but if its really not bothering then see if it grows back on its own

Re: Skin Condition
Where it is, on top of the head, I would say its demodex mites. Try putting an advocate spot-on on him and see if theres any difference a couple of weeks later. This has always worked for me

Re: Skin Condition
Yes, it sounds more like demodex. It can actually be seasonal & is often more noticable in Spring & autumn - damp days with the temperature fluctuating a lot.
Either advocate may help, or a slightly gentler treatment would be Camrosa Ointment.

Re: Skin Condition
Camrosa is good, and works as long as you apply it, but I have found when you do stop symptoms can reappear. What have your experiences been with it? I only ever used it on Tal when she had demodex as a pup, little baldy!

I've only used it for sore, itchy paws & it worked well. The thing with Camrosa is that you have to apply it exactly as the instructions say, and overlap the area to be treated.

I hate to go against your vet, but those are typical areas for demodex to show! Demodex doesn't always leave large bald areas, sometimes it only affects small areas.

Re: Skin Condition
After applying sudocream Dillon stopped scratching his undercarriage and it had healed where he'd been scratching. But now he has something else, it resembles a nettle rash and the sudocream does not give him any relief whatsoever. After a chat with vet reception she thought it could be down to the flea treatment, but that coincided with the first irritation and that had cleared up. I have been spending some time on the field and wonder if may have something to do with that. He is booked into the vets.
