Walking Off The Lead ?
Hi all,
Im considering buying a puppy after weeks of looking around and ive decided a staffy pup is best by far but im curious to know if they are ok walking off of the lead too as for many years now ive seen an elderly guy with his one walking around and not once has he ever had a lead on it. Is this just a matter of very good and clever training ? or is it something a novice can do with hard work and time ?
I ask purely because i work in the sticks and no one is ever around so there is no threat of other dogs etc, just concerned about the running off and not coming back lol.
Thanks

Re: Walking Off The Lead ?
it's all depends on the dogs, you should tell how your dog is going be in the first year. i knew straight my xena didn't need to be on the lead at all because she wasn't bothered about other dog or animals but i knew billie & sam had to stay on the lead till it was all clear of other dogs
Re: Walking Off The Lead ?
are they generally good learners and easy to train on the whole ?

i didn't really need to do much with my but i have been with them 24/7 for most of their lifes, what i go by is a tired dog is always a good dog and it has work for me

Rocco is only on lead by roads etc, the rest of the time he is off lead.
Dixie is on lead unless there are no other dogs around, then she can come off.
Deano is following in Rocco's footsteps.
I think the sooner and younger you get them off lead the better - pups never stray far from you and if you take high value treats with you, they wll always return.
