So Bruno goes out for the first time on the 28th and I have decided to give him a head start round the home but he's so stubborn and has decided he does not want to walk even for treats plus he trys to eat his lead, any tips??

Keep a soft lead and collar on whilst he is at home, get him used to it and then every so often pick the lead up, slowly slowly Smile

I bet you can't wait to get out and about! Logan was exactly the same, refusing to move, biting the lead etc. Just be patient and when he starts to make a move with you, praise him. Don't tug him on too much because he will most likely just pull back lol!

Also, just do small little walks for the first while. He shouldn't need much exercise, just more of a chance to explore his surroundings. I walked Logan too much as a pup I feel, because it was summer and I wanted to show him off!

Yes, when you do take him out the general rule of thumb is 5 minutes of lead walking per month of age , per walk. Added to that you can let him run around off lead in a safe area as long as he's allowed to rest whenever he wants.

Agree with Janey. Also take the collar and lead of numerous times throught the day so he will get used to them. If he starts to walk pick up the lead and follow

Agree with above, small walks to begin with just around your garden if possible if not just around the block. A light weight lead kept on around the home is a great idea to get him used to wearing the collar and lead. Good luck with it all.

Oh so by the time he's allowed out he will be able to walk for about 10 minutes, I won't force him to walk but he will be bribed with treats lol I brought a medium harness but it is habit big for him so I am still using his puppy collar, I brought a metal lead but he has a puppy lead so I am using both though he's not fussy as he trys to eat both lol thanks all x

Chances are he mightent wanna walk at all at the very beginning lol. Logan just lay down and refused to move at all for the first while.

It's to avoid him being under to much stress from exercise as he is at the stage where he will be growing the quickest.

When you take him out just allow him to take his time and stop/rest whenever he needs to. He'll be that happy to just get a good sniff around that he'll be tired out with that alone lol!

One of the min things you will need when walking him is a camera so you can share plenty of pics of him with us Big Grin

Hi, I am having problems starting a new topic for some reason...

I know my pup will only need 5 minute walks to every month of his age but I wondered does that count for running around a park on a training lead or extention lead? I know he can run around without the lead for as long as he likes as he will be able to rest but I can't risk letting him off the lead at such a young age but I want him to have a good run around on a training lead.....thanks.

I think the 5 minute rule applies to on lead walking. If he is off the lead exploring etc he can take as many breaks as he wants.

Training leads are totally awesome. I've only starting using one lately after reading advice on the forum. I always carry mine with me now to give Logan a bit of freedom when I'm in a safe enough area. They are good too for practicing recall etc.

I have to get one tomorrow if pets at home sell them, Bruno has his first walk on the 4th of Feb yay

So he can't have as much time running on a training lead then? I was hoping it would not count as he will be on a long lead.

I think he should be ok on the training lead as long as he is just playing at his pace. When I first got Logan he was happy to just dander about sniffing and exploring. Just make sure he doesn't over exert himself. I probably over exercised Logan as a pup tbh, but I never felt like I was pushing him. He would have happily walked all day. But in hindsight I probably should have taken him home a bit more lol!

4th of February?...That'll mark exactly one year of me having Logan that day Big Grin

OK, thanks for the advice, I will try and get a long training lead so it's like he's not on a lead as such.

See I am just worried about joint and hip problems in the future but Bruno needs to run as he's getting frustrated now plus he's full of unused energy too.

Logan looks sweet with his teddy lol

A long training lead counts as no lead as long as he's allowed to stop & rest whenever he wants. Plus, don't let him get too tired playing cause he'll still have to walk home again!

you might also want to take him out and carry him a bit until the 4th just to get him to associate the sounds of the big scarey outside Smile , keep up the garden walks, lots of small walks and praise he will soon get the hang of it. Tilly was a nightmare when she started but after a week or so she knoew it was fun and was raring to go. Tommy had his big sister so he was no problem

I think that will def do Bruno a lot of good. I brought Logan to the busy town centre as a young pup and just found a place to sit down. He loved the fact that so many people (mostly girls) made such a fuss about him.

So did I to be fair Tongues
