Dog Puppy Toy's

Post by Eclipse Sat Jan 11 2020, 21:43

Does anyone have any reccomendations for puppy safe toys that will keep her attention ?
I bought these https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07WD8QPRB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but Shey seems to be pulling threads off the rope toys and eating them as in her cage earlier
I found what looked like a 3 inch long poo but actually was a clump of the threads off a rope toy she swallowed that went through her system and out the other end and I am worried about what toys to give her now.
She has a puppy kong but I want to give her some more to play with that are safe.

The first thing I would say is that staffies are generally destructive with most toys. Then I would add that there are very few toys you can leave unattended.

Puppy will spend most of their time eating, sleeping and playing a bit but not for hours on end. Cotton rope toys can be good but must be removed when they frey, especially if yours then eats the threads. Kong are good robust toys as are west coast design. But for a puppy, you can also use knotted dish cloth. When teething, damp cloth can be given frozen to help ease sore gums.
Mine like cuddly toys but they generally chew on ears, extremities so need close inspection for damage.

These can occupy a puppy, especially if you put a few bits of kibble inside

Mine spent many hours with the kong puppy teething stick, kong scrunch knots toys and kong wild knots bear.
Please never give antlers, they break teeth.

I can have the same problem with Katy & rope toys. Love having to pull it out her butt!! I buy the bulk toys off amazon, although they don't last her long she has great fun. There are some on there that are just plastic with squeakers & no rope toys! I see you use Smile amazon, mine is going towards the senior staffy club. What's your selected charity if you don't mind me asking?

Nifty thanks very much for the link to the toy, as always when i go looking for something on Amazon or ebay I fall down a rabit hole and spend hours trying to decide the best one to get, in the end I went for the Kong version of toy you linked to, I see in a review picture that a doggy chewed off one of the spikes and i was worried Shey would do the same and swallow it so I went with the Kong one as it looks more robust.

Hi Jenc
My smile donates to the PDSA as I have used them in the past and may need their help again in the future.

I understand what you mean about chewing bits off and finding them the other end. That’s why I’m very careful what the toys are made of.
I choose only 100% cotton ropes or rubber tous.
Nylabone are not one of my favorites as they may last but it’s simply made of plastic.

One toy mine loved was an empty plastic bottle, like water or soda bottles. You can also put a bit of kibble in it for the rattle. Bottle must be removed as soon as damaged (pierced) but it makes for cheap and cheerful toy.

Funnily enough Shey was playing with a water bottle earlier Smile , she loves chewing the tops off, I remove the labels before letting her play with it and soon as the top comes off I take put them both in the bin.

A strange thing happened yesterday, I see Shey pull a piece of cotton thread off one of her toys and i went to get it out of her mouth and I could not see her top teeth, i thought maybe they havnt grown through yet then I looked again and all of her top front teeth were hidden by bits of chew bone which all stuck together and covered them, also this stuff stuck to the roof of her mouth and some  thread from her toys stuck to that, so i'm reluctant to give her anymore chewbones aswell now.

Oh gosh, those chew bones don’t sound or look very nice at all.
They’re not rawhide chews by any chance ?

As a general rule, we don’t feed rawhide as it’s no good for dogs. There are alternatives on the market which are much better and safer.

Also, I’d be very careful which chews you give to a puppy in general as they don’t always chew as much as they should before swallowing and they’re close to losing baby teeth.

No it wasn't rawhide, a kind of hard compressed thing

I don't know much about puppies, hence why i'm here Big Grin
I was going to try and get her a proper big bone but i guess that's not good because of baby teeth ?

Whimzees are really good, but you may be better off with the ordinary ones rather than the rice ones.

Whimzees are great and mine love theirs (the normal type) but be careful, they are not recommended for dogs under 9 months : see statement at the bottom of this page
