Puppy Toys
So i'm going to become a puppy Dad in 4 weeks, when i go and collect my staffie furball...I was wondering what sort of toys you could recommend for me? I'd like things for him to chew on, maybe one of those balls that you put treats in, a kong etc...
Also i've heard various people mention giving puppies frozen carrot and banana for teething, but im goign off topic..
So any advice on toys and things for a new puppy??
Many thanks

Re: Puppy Toys
frozen towel..that's a good one for the calorie conscious owner!
I've heard dogs go nuts for boomer balls..You couldn't get them years ago when i last had a dog.
When he's an adult i'll probably have a go with a flirt pole as i;ve heard lots of positive things about them.
There's bound to be a pets place near me, i'll have to check it out and see what they've got..
ps: What do people think about letting their dogs chomp on antlers??

Re: Puppy Toys
Ours love cardboard and I make 'thinking' toys by simply putting treats in an old cardboard box or, better still, postage tubes. They love working out how to get the treats out, then trash the carboard that simply goes in recycling afterwards. They also love plastic toys but you have to be a bit careful to scoop up bits so they don't swallow them, especially puppies.
My dogs are all fed raw so have bones, usually calf bones which aren't as hard as beef bones, and Millie started with turkey bones when she was young. I know lots of people's dogs love the antlers too.
Boomer balls are good, as are treat balls, and our all time favourite ball is the whilster one you use with a chuckit, but that's not really one for baby puppies.
You're really getting into this, aren't you?

Kongs, treat balls or as said cardboard boxes go down well You'll find being owned by a staffie comes expensive with toys as they are expert destroyers. The only things that survive here are Kongs, boomer & antlers. Look forward to seeing lots of pics

Re: Puppy Toys
i'll get a collection of textures and objects and see what floats his boat. When i had my other staffs many years ago, you could balls and tug toys made from a material called cressite, but i can't find it online..i guess the company went under(?). They really took the abuse well.
The breeder feeds her dogs on raw, and she showed me many of the things they eat..In fact, their diet was better than the humans! Obviously i won't be putting the little boy on raw until he's mature, but thanks for all of the information and feedback...
Liz, I'm getting proper into it!! I bought a clicker for training earlier and even ordered a tube of bacon flavored doggy toothpaste!!
I've been looking a puppy collars and leads and various other bits and bobs...I'm also sorting out the cupboard under my stairs and getting rid of/reorganizing stuff so that it can become the mutts cupboard!!
i'm SOOOO looking forward to him! I keep getting excited flushes and start giggling to myself!

Re: Puppy Toys
I just googled cressite - it tempts you with some fun looking stuff, none of which seems to be available!
No reason you can't put him on raw, especially if he's already been introduced to it by the breeder.

You do have to be careful about introducing new protein sources but otherwise it's fairly straightforwards. I use a different supplier, but a lot of people use Nature's Menu and their puppy feeding advice is good

And then with bones you won't need the bacon flavoured toothpaste. I have to say that sounds revolting! Never brushed my dogs' teeth in their lives and with lots to chew on there is nothing to brush off.
Clicker - big thumbs up! I love it!
You are such a lost cause...

Re: Puppy Toys
Ruby luvs carrots and cardboard out of loo roll or kitchen roll and the plastic tub I put me washing liquid in the washer in. She had no interest in proper toys so I've give up trying and usually just give her something from round the house which she luvs.
Oh and hairbrushes and rollers and socks and pens but that's another story! Lol
