Torn crucial ligament
Hi all new member here i have a 12 yr old staffy who has unfortunately torn his crucial ligament in his rear knee ive been told by the vet that total cost is around £3100 i am really worried about the affect this operation may have on my dog although he is fit and healthy its the 8 weeks total cage rest after op i feel will be really stressful for him has anyone had this op done and what was the results as my vet said it wont get better but it does not need to be done straight away he does walk with a limp occasionally but still climbs stairs still runs round in circles when greeting anyone so wondering what to do for the best

Re: Torn crucial ligament
I've known people with older dogs that have had this operation done & they've all turned out great!
However, you have to think about the effects of the anaesthetic as well as the cage rest. Some older dogs don't handle the anaesthetic very well. Have another word with your vet to put your mind at ease on that score - if your boy has a strong heart & no known problem with anaesthetic in the past, he should be okay.
Yes, he'll find it hard for the weeks of rest, and you'll probably have to feed him less to compensate, but they do cope on the whole.

Re: Torn crucial ligament
Hi from me & Katy Sorry to hear of your boy's injury, so difficult with a staffy as they don't know how to go steady! If your boy is fit enough for the op I would go for it. I know cage rest will be a nightmare but you could get through it with mental stimulation games & low fat treats spread on likimatts

Re: Torn crucial ligament
Hello and welcome.
Gosh, they do worry us at times, don’t they. Shows how much he means to you
You’ll find ways to keep him quieter during post-op recovery. I found wearing a (medical) t-shirt after their spaying kept my girls calmer.
Don’t hesitate if we can help in any way, an ear to listen or a shoulder to lean on
