Torn Cruciate Ligaments
Has anyone else had problems with rear leg tearing of cruciate ligaments on their dog?
My bitch Ella is 14 months old and currently recovering from an enforced operation after repeated lameness/carrying of her right leg; usually the day after heavy walks/ball games. She's a very energetic dog, and a sucker for ball games. Luckily for me, I have her insured and the operation to repair her badly torn ligaments went very well and she is recovering very well. Currently on week 3 of her recovery, which allows twice daily 10 minute walks on level ground, progressing slowly over the next 8-10 weeks when it is hoped she will be fully recovered and chasing her ball again

Re: Torn Cruciate Ligaments
Hi Janey,
I've just got back in from taking Ella out for her 10 minute walk, she's recovering really well & still doesn't understand why she's kept on her lead, only having short walks & no ball games as she clearly feels up to it.
I'm sticking to her recovery programme as recommended by her consultant as best I can; as I too had a massive operation to repair my own cruciate ligaments after a motorcycle smash over 10 years ago. This subsequently ended my rugby playing career & I still have a slight limp & suffer discomfort during damp or cold weather conditions, I take sports strength Glucosamine & this really helps me.
I just hope that by sticking to her recovery regime that Ella will have no lasting affects.
Sorry to hear about your own dog, is there any medication or treatment that can help with arthritis in dogs? I've already been advised that Ella may contract this in later life
I hope your dog recovers swiftly & fully!

Re: Torn Cruciate Ligaments
So sorry to read about Ella, and wishing her a speedy recovery.
We dont have any joint problems with Rocky at the moment but we do give him these treats while out on walks anyway, I dont know they may be of benefit to Ella:

Re: Torn Cruciate Ligaments
Yes she is already on a course of injections, its just something we have to manage
Ella will be grand and yes always best to stick to the vets programs, before I had the x rays done we thought it may be a torn ligament or tissue damage, but that wasn't the case. Hay ho we love em warts and all so to speak

Re: Torn Cruciate Ligaments
Sorry to hear about this but great news Ella is doing well, and I dont blame you for sticking to the progamme, as like you my hubby torn his knee cruciate ligaments and has had two operations. He did the damage on his trails motor bike, that put an end to it sadly. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Vets know best after all, which is why their fees are so high I guessjaney wrote:

Re: Torn Cruciate Ligaments
Hi all,
Firstly apologies for my lack of input of late, I have been here there and everywhere during the festive break and will be glad to get back to work tomorrow for a rest!
Just a quick update on Ella's progress:
She's now on week 6 of her recovery, which involves twice daily 30-40 minute walks, including various surfaces, grass, concrete, small stairs/steps and hill work. The most pleasing aspect of it from her point of view is that she is allowed the last 5 minutes of these walks off her lead
In all, she is doing really well and the surgeon has done a fantastic job. I'm very pleased to see my little baby getting back to full strength and fitness, it won't be long before she joins me for another overnight fishing session methinks

Re: Torn Cruciate Ligaments
Pleased to hear that Ella is doing well Nick, if she does go overnight fishing with you be sure she has somewhere warm and dry to lye down or sit, I'm sure you have this in mind already though

Fear not, she has a new bed (photos later) and always take her place INSIDE my sleeping bag overnight long before I'm ready to get in it
