Skin issues
Hi everyone,
I feel that I need to post an update on Archie’s skin issues just in case it can help someone else.
When we picked him up at 8 weeks he had a few bumps and very small bald patches in his head. Initially we thought it’s from puppy play, but it slowly got worse over the next few weeks. He had small red bumps on his belly, small crusty patches where he would loose his fur and it had spread down his back and tail. Initially he was on leaps and bounds kibble and wet food, which is what the breeder had him on. As his stool was very soft and runny at times, had up to ten stools a day and he wasn’t gaining any weight, we transitioned him onto royal canin kibble at around 11 weeks. This helped with his stools and weight gain but made no difference with his skin issue. At 13 weeks we had scrapes done which came back negative. Negative for ringworm. The vet (not my regular one) gave me some steroid cream, which I didn’t use as I felt it’s a bit extreme as we didn’t know what was causing his skin issues. I started giving him sardines, organic coconut oil, carrots and eggs. Tried plain organic yogurt but he wasn’t a fan of it. We did medicated baths twice a weeks for 3 weeks, used malaseb medicated shampoo which helped with itchiness. After having a chat to some very helpful ladies at my local pet shop and the beautiful people on this forum, I started transitioning him onto a grain free food at 16 weeks. He is now on ivory coat (Australian made). I also changed all his treats to grain free. Still loving his daily sardines (one a day), a spoon of coconut oil, daily carrot and I have also started giving him raw eggs. He is also on a glucosamine supplement daily (as advised by his vet specialist because he was a swimmers puppy). Not sure which one of these things helped, if it’s a combination of them or if his skin issues got better because his immune system is maturing, but there is a massive improvement. He still has a few spots and sometimes new ones but the difference is amazing.
Anyway, I hope this helps someone
Two and a half weeks ago (before grain free kibble)
A week of being on grain free
Today
I will do another update and some more photos once he is completely on grain free kibble
