Puppy snorting / breathing
Hi all
So we have a new puppy... Olive. She is wonderful, full of life, intelligent, eating and drinking well, everything normal. She is 9 weeks, but has rather noisy breathing, not all of the time, but mostly. Like a whimpering, raspy noise.... Is this normal?

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
No, it certainly isn't.
Have you booked her in for her first vaccinations yet? If you have, and it's within the next couple of days, then mention it then. It might help if you can video the sound for the vet in case she doesn't do it at the appointment.
If you haven't booked her in yet, I would certainly consider taking her to the vet to be checked out.

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
Congratulations ! I’m presuming that this isn’t the blue/brindle pup you found in your first posts here ?
It’s always difficult to reply to health questions online without seeing the animal, even more so when it concerns something that can’t be taken in photo/video.
I’d be guessing this isn’t really normal and if it’s enough to cause concern for you, I’d pop over to the vets to make sure. Even if you can just phone your vet first, if you don’t fancy the trip there. Good advice by Gilly to try to record the problem at home in case it isn’t easy to hear once at the vets.
As a general rule, it’s a good idea to have any new pet checked over by the vet after acquisition. Even despite the best breeder and a vet certificate given by their vet, it’s also the occasion to introduce your new pet to your vet and to discuss future treatment (vaccinations, parasite, sterilisation and other).
Look forwards to seeing more photos of your little one !

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
Im not sure if its just a strange pitched cry. Shes not cried at all since getting her... Really settled in well. Its like a funny sounding cry/whine. Like when we stroke her she may do it. Its only sometimes, like a snoring sound maybe. Shes absolutly fine in herself. Eating, drinking fine etc.... Cant work out if its coming from mouth, nose, chest or throat.

I don't think anyone here is qualified to be able to say. You need to ask your vet.

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
ask the vet. is it every time?
and are you sure the pup isnt dreaming? when they growl, whimper etc. is it definitely snorting?
is this the same pup you wanted to get or a different one? were the parents KC registered and the pup fully KC registered. did both parents have the relevant health tests?

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
Yes kc and parents were lovely. Spent 2 hours with them. Its like a whimper when breathing. Not all the time. She has not been crying at night. Or at all... for example shes just fallen asleep after a play and not making the noise....

Staffies are very vocal (not barking) - are you sure she’s not just communicating with you ?

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
It's very hard to 'diagnose' a noise. I still think a recording & a visit to the vet is the way forward.

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
mention it to the vet, but don't expect too much to be done, if its not all the time and no very obvious signs they'll likely say it is fine.
could just be her dreaming, my dogs will howl, cry, growl, etc in their sleep if theyre dreaming. have you owned a dog previously? especially a staffy? if so im sure you'd be aware of this and know if it was that or not.... its very very likely nothing to worry about

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
also out of interest, as long as youre comfortable saying... how much did you spend on the pup in the end? I know we were discussing price of a fully KC blue staffy in the other thread. did you get her in your budget?

glad she was in budget, im surprised really as £600 for a KC reg blue nowadays is sort of unheard of. was she one of the last ones left out of the litter

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
Been to the vets. No issues at all. He said the noise was communication. He did say her first vac was nobovac L2, but they recommend L4, it wasnt my normal vet.... I have her booked in at her normal next weds for 2nd jab of nobovac but not sure if they will also recommend the L4. He wanted to restart her next week, but that will then mean a longer wait till she goes out.

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
I would personally keep going with the L2.
Then, research as much as possible, not only on the pros & cons of L2 v L4, but also on the occurance of Leptospirosis and Weil's disease in your area (and any areas you are likely to visit. If the area(s) are totally clear for at least 3 years, then the Lepto jab will not be needed.

Re: Puppy snorting / breathing
Sounds like she is just dreaming to me, My Hank does it and I find it very cute hehe we get all sorts of noises from him in his sleep, he didn't cry when we brought him home either and he is a very good boy, has the occasionally mischievous moments but I wouldn't have him any other way

Have you tried to record her doing it? Maybe if you posted a video in the video section one of us might have seen/ heard it before.
