After a bit of advice if possible?
Hi. Found this forum whilst googling symptoms.
My dog is roughly 12 now, he's been part of the family for the past 10 years but can't be 100% sure how old he was when he had him.
He developed a bit of a cough a few weeks back, it was a dry cough and was quite often so I booked him in with the vets.
The vet said on Wednesday that it sounded like kennel cough and she was going to give him some antibiotics.
He's a big boy at 24kg, so has to take 2 and a a half tablets per dose a day.
My query is, since giving him these tablets his cough is sounding worse. He's got to take them until Monday and she said it should have cleared up by then and if not to take him back. I'm just wondering if anybodys baby has had this and it sounded worse before it gets better?
Vet said if it hasn't cleared by then, then she will have to possibly give him an x-ray and see what else is going on, his heart was fine and his lungs sounded clear.
It's breaking me to hear him coughing
Thank you in advance

Re: After a bit of advice if possible?
Hello and welcome
You say the cough sound worse (so different to before) but has the frequency increased ? Chances are that you’ve been prescribed some kind of antibiotic for your boy and they generally take a few days before starting to see improvement.
If you’re still worried this morning, maybe you can give your vet a ring if you’re not able to go there in person ? They might be able to reassure or give advice by phone which could help you tie over until Monday.

Re: After a bit of advice if possible?
Hi and welcome from me and mine
Unless you think the medication is causing other symptoms as well (vomiting, etc.), I would give them at least a couple more days. It can sometimes take a little while for them to show results. Also, with some things like our colds the symptoms are actually as a result of our bodies fighting the virus rather than the virus itself, so I wonder if it might be that the ABs are starting to work but that the cough will take a bit longer to go.
I hope he responds soon. It's worrying seeing any dog ill, but especially oldies.

Hello, welcome to the forum.
Poor boy, I can understand why you're so concerned, it can't be nice.
Sometimes anti-b's can take a couple of days to get to grips with a problem. The symptoms, in the meantime, may appear to get worse. As already said, give it another couple of days before you do anything else, unless there's a really marked deterioration. Are you in the UK? If so, will your vet's be open on Monday as it's a Bank Holiday?

Re: After a bit of advice if possible?
Thanks for the replies everyone.. yeah I'm in the UK. South Wales. I'm not sure if the vets will be open on Monday but the ABs aren't due to finish until Monday so I'm going to continue and complete the course and call them on Tuesday if I need to.. it was very frequent last night but seems not to be too bad this morning. Hoping it's the same as us and always worse in the evening.. he isn't eating his food either but is drinking plenty and I have read the side effects of the tablets is loss of appetite. He will eat 'human food but not his own so I'm not overly concerned about that yet. He hasn't vomited either so I think its just the antibiotics or his body fighting this virus.. Hoping and praying this starts to get better soon.. it's so horrible to see bless him

Poor boy! You could try to tempt him by hand feeding his food? Although he might then expect that ever after!

Re: After a bit of advice if possible?
I bought him a tin of pedigree dog food yesterday and he wolfed it down so he seems to be ok.. this cough us still there though, last day of ABs ttomorrow and it still sounds like a hacking cough, a lot more of a wet cough and not a dry one now if that makes any sense. Will call vets again Tuesday and see what they have to say about it. Seems to be getting less frequent now but it's still there. Hard work seeing my baby cough so much, it's horrible when we are ill never mind them xx

It is horrible seeing them cough, you feel so helpless. Hopefully it is just a case of letting the meds do their stuff.
Do let us know how he gets on.

Sometimes anti-b's have to be extended a few days to make sure.

Re: After a bit of advice if possible?
Bit of an update.. not a very nice one unfortunately..
We had many more vets trips.. we had codeine tablets, steroids, another course of antibiotics and something else..
The vet wanted to do xrays but she was a bit concerned because of his respiratory problems and the anaesthetic so we decided not to go ahead with that.
My baby passed away Monday night at home.. my heart has shattered into a million pieces..
It's been a long emotional journey and I know he's no longer suffering.. doesn't make any of it any easier for us all tho..
