Home remedies for mites??
Hi all,
Ryker pup seems to have mites and the vet doesn't want to treat him until his 6 months old which is not that far away (April 20th) but I was wondering if there was anything I could do that might help with them? Honestly, the mites don't seem to be bothering him that much. He has lost some fur around one of his eyes and is itchy but overall still a happy dog.
Is there anything I can do to help him?
Thanks much for any advice

Re: Home remedies for mites??
No, not that I know of.
The reason the vet wants to wait is that often a pup's immune system will develop enough to fight the Mites itself & treatment won't be necessary. Don't forget that the treatment involves quite harsh chemicals so unless a puppy has really bad Mites a vet will try to avoid treatment.
There are shampoos that supposedly help, but I doubt they really work, and could strip the coat of natural oils.

Obviously if you feel it's getting worse then get back to the vet. Hopefully he'll cope with them himself.

You can try some tea tree oil washes in the mean time, very watered down of course. Pest of most kind hate tea tree oil, it may not cure him but it may in the mean time keep them a little less active.

Hes had an appointment set for when he turns 6 months for a couple weeks now. I'll try the oil to see if that helps. Thank you!!

Re: Home remedies for mites??
Of course you worry!
Did you know that about 95% of pup's are born with the Demodectic mite? It's not a problem unless they start to increase beyond the pup's ability to regulate them. Most pup's never show any signs of them, some will lose a little hair until their immune systems are nature enough to cope, and a very few will go on to have mild - serious problems.
It's the Sarcoptic mite that's the real problem as it's very difficult to get rid of. But that's one that is mainly found in strays because of their proximity to urban foxes.
Demodex is obviously something to be aware of, but not too concerned about.
