Champagne coloured staffies ?!
Just come across a stud who specialize in blues but who have a litter with 3 champagne coloured pups (the others are light blues).
Both parents are blue.
Are these pups really a very rare (undesirable) colour or just a genetic catastrophy ?

Re: Champagne coloured staffies ?!
They didn’t say they were champagne but I googled the colour and it looks like the one they kept and we keep in touch so I’ve seen how he’s turned out, I remember they wanted more for the other one but wasn’t stupid price maybe just a extra couple of hundred on what we paid for hank.

They’re selling for 2000 euros here, 3 males “for company only” as impossible to confirm for reproduction or show

They're fawns. The red equivalent of blue. You can get all sorts of shades of fawn, just as you get lots of shades of blue.
Not rare, not worth more - but will never do anything in the show ring. As pets they're going to be just as wonderful for someone as any other colour.

Re: Champagne coloured staffies ?!
We see that colour at Danaher quite a bit (although the dogs are crosses with varying degrees of staffie-ness). In fact, we have a couple at the moment, both reserved, and a litter of pups with varying shades of red-fawn

I thought fawn was the colour of Liz’s Millie, for example, but Millie is much “richer” in colour.gillybrent wrote:They're fawns. The red equivalent of blue.
Would that also mean that any light coloured dog has compulsory dilute gene colouring ?

No, but that pale gold just isn't a 'Stafford' colour. You'll only get it when there are two recessive fawn genes meeting. If you look back in the pedigrees you'll always see fawns or red x blues. Unless, of course, there's been a cross in the past. Very often, a white stafford crossed with, say, a yellow lab will produce pale gold pups.

Re: Champagne coloured staffies ?!
No colour of any animal is worth any more than another. A real breeder/one who cares about the breed won't sell them as special...only as a good animal conformation and health wise.
Unfortunately "nice" colours sell better if people think it is special. Honestly lexi was the cheapest in her litter, she was the only dark brindle the rest were red and white. She was advertised less as she had an underbite thus not suitable for showing or breeding but they also said to us most people dont like that colour...soo that was the pup for me!
I just seen a thing or read a thing on black animals not rehoming as well...not sure why. I love black animals..always have had black dogs, rabbits, cats. A black horse was always my dream but i only ever had one on loan for 3 months as she was a head case and had to go back but i do have a black mini horse. Hes still a nut but lovable lol black animals rock

Re: Champagne coloured staffies ?!
It's worth remembering that a 'yellow' dog is the result of a recessive gene; a'fawn' or 'blue' dog is the result of a recessive dilute gene.
So, a yellow Labrador mated to a yellow Labrador will produce a mixture of yellow and black pup's because most yellow labs have one black & one yellow gene & it's a coin toss how those match up with the parents. If a yellow lab has two yellow genes it will have a brown nose & brown pigment. Two Blacks will produce all Blacks & a black x yellow will produce a mixture.
The dilute gene works in a similar way, but affects colour by 'masking' either black or red. So a pup with two dilute black genes will have no black whatsoever. The well bred ones will have very dark pigment (usually bred from a black or black brindle with the blue gene to either an existing blue or other colour known to have the dilute gene) but will not have black noses or black eye rims. A fawn, however, can have black nose & eye rims.

I’ve heard that too but I do think stereotypes play a big role in this. Black cats are unlucky, black dogs are devil dogs. The only exception are horses because most little girls want their own Black Beauty one day !
