Muscle tear - external intercostal
Has anyone had experience with their dog tearing their external intercostal muscle? (over ribcage). $900 later for testing, x-rays and ultrasounds, we have figured out the problem! Recently, my 3 year old staffy began having breathing difficulties and an odd indentation appeared on her upper right side, over her ribcage. She was initially treated for tracheitis as she had an inflamed throat/windpipe but medication made no difference. The indentation was to be monitored. It turns out she is having difficulty breathing due to severe muscle pain! My poor girl, being a staffy she refuses to show when she's hurting! This explains the indentation as her lungs and ribcage are in perfect condition but her external intercostal muscle has completely torn. Vet has decided against surgery and has prescribed strong anti-inflammatory painkillers and a lengthy rest period. If anyone has had experience with this type of injury, how long was your pups rest period for recovery? How did you keep them rested and did breathing difficulties subside over time?
Thanks so much!

Re: Muscle tear - external intercostal
I've no experience of this myself, but hopefully someone will be along soon who does.
Are the painkillers working?

They're helping slightly but the injury is quite extensive so they're only doing so much for her. The painkillers are mainly so she is able to take a full breath as she's reluctant due to the pain. We're trying to avoid any infection to the lungs.

Not something I've experienced but heartened that the vet hasn't rushed into surgery, it's worth trying rest and meds before anything drastic.
It is the hardest thing keeping a Staffy calm but certainly worth the effort if it means no surgery, fingers crossed that does the trick. Do keep us updated with Bonnies progress.

Oh dear, it's hard work!
Good luck - has the vet given an indication of how long she'll have to rest?

I haven't had the experience with my dog but I have had it with myself! I thought I had punctured my lung, the pain was unbelievable & breathing was really painful. I hope she gets better soon
