ID Tag on collar or harness Empty ID Tag on collar or harness

Hello,

I have only just been made aware in puppy classes that it is illegal for dogs to go out without a collar and ID tag, Now does it 100% have to be on a collar or are we able to get Hank a ID tag to go onto a harness as we don't want to have a collar on him we much prefer the harness as he is a puller.

Yes they do have to have a collar with ID tag on. I don't use a collar for walking Misty as she is a puller too so we have her on a harness but she wears a collar at the same time.

Seriously, I don't think anyone is going to stop you and say 'that tag's on a harness and not a collar'. I think the law was written without really considering how many people now use harnesses. I don't even know anyone who's been stopped for their dog not having a tag anywhere.

Mine don't wear collars except when travelling (there is a reason!) but they have tags on their harnesses. I'm not overly keen on collars, you can have accidents, and I wouldn't rely on a tag on a collar over a harness - how many lost harnesses have you found vs lost collars?

I personally wouldn't stress as long as he has one.

I think it would be splitting hairs if anyone got pulled on that. What's the difference really as long as they have an ID tag attached to them.

the letter of the law says a collar must be worn.

whilst i doubt that you would be stopped etc, why give the stafford haters more ammunition? ("Typical stafford owner - think they're above the law"etc)

i've seen many people walking their dogs with the lead attached to a harness, but still with a collar on. if you're worried about the collar coming off because of the i. d. tag, then by all means get another tag for the harness.

We did have a collar on him when we first got him to try get him used to having a collar on as we did want him to have both at one point, but he scratched with it on constantly and we tried different collars and still scratched, I was scared he would scratch too much and hurt himself (this is my first pup so I don't know if that's actually possible but that was my train of thought).

pups can take quite a while to get used to a collar, you just need to persevere with a couple of minutes at a time & plenty of praise/play/treats.

many breeders nowadays put lightweight, quick release, colour coded collars on pups as soon as they're born - that way they're used to something around their necks when they get to their new home.

if you want, there's nothing to stop you having an id tag on the collar and the harness.
