How can I keep a long living staffy Empty How can I keep a long living staffy

I want a staffordshire bull terrier soon and I want it to live a very long time with me. How can I keep the dog to live for a long time like 15 years or more. I assume that I have to keep it exercised and well fed and hydrated. I've heard that dog food brands like purina, Iams, Pedigree, etc., have higher grains in their dog food which can cause health problems for dogs. So do I have to feed him generic dog foods with lower to no grains?

To be honest, I wouldn't focus on how long a dog is going to live. Rather, I'd look at doing the best you can in terms of nutrition, exercise and mental wellbeing to keep him as happy and healthy as you can for the length of his life, whatever that may be. If you do that, then you are likely (but never guaranteed) that he'll be with you for as long as his body was made to.

For me, keeping a dog as healthy and happy as possible includes good nutrition. There are quite a few brands of food now, both wet and dry, that provide great nutrition and that avoid additives, sugars and grain. This is a great site and should help you find the best you can afford:

Bear in mind that many now deliver.

The other option is raw meat. It takes a bit more research and work, and it does mean planning (and freezer space), but it's definitely worth looking into.

Exercise is key to good health as well, you can feed the very best but if your dog sits around all day without exercise and mental stimulation it'll never (in my opinion) be as healthy and happy as a dog that gets plenty of exercise, training, play and company.

You do have to be realistic, though. 15 years or more is beyond the normal lifespan of a staffie, which is more like 12-14 years. 15 for any dog is pretty good going!

In short, love your dog and do the best for the dog it is today. If you get today right, the future should look after itself, and will then be whatever it will be.

Ok. My grandfather had a staffy(or possibly a pitbull) bullmastiff mix that lived for 18 years. He fed him generic dog food and sometimes rice and chicken. Walked him all the time, kept him hydrated, etc. The only problem was that he was an outdoor dog which mean't that he'd spend most of the time outside. He'd even sleep outside in his dog house. I'd love to have a staffy and wish him for the best of the future.

He'd escape sometimes from the garage. He'd be gone for 3 days then come back like nothing happened. I'd definitely never leave my new dog outside all day knowing that he can escape and get hurt, stolen, or killed

Welcome to the forum from Flo and me Big Grin

I agree 100% with Liz's post, as long as the dog has good regular exercise, good wholesome food and mental stimulation then you'll be setting the foundations for a good long life.
