Hi my staffy has long legs Empty Hi my staffy has long legs

Post by sassybutterfly Wed Jan 23 2013, 00:30

Hi i got a staffy a few days befor xmas, the guy told me she was a full staffy, but my vet says she is a staffy cross. ive been mooching about on the internet and saw a right up that said, long legged staffys are usually cross breeds and usually pit bulls. long legged staffys are also known as irish staffys, which are also cross breeds, and usually pit bulls. dont mention to the police you have a long legged staffy or an irish staffy or they will come knocking at your door. so of course now ive made my self worried reading all this. if this dog i have brought is a pit bull or has pit bull in it. do i need to worry abouts its tempremant as i have a 5 year old and a 3 year old. or is it no differant to any other pup you bring into the household.

i will try and attach some pics of my dog, we have called her primrose, and she is about 3/4 months old .

I considered boxer but i think bull mastiff. (Search bull mastiff cross staffy, for an idea of how they sometimes look).
Ridger id say no because she has a short muzzle and short ears.
Pitbulls have a very bad reputation but are still a fine dog if brought up right so dont worry too much. But it isnt. Smile

Firstly, never believe what they say about pitbulls. Pitbulls can be dog aggressive, but it's extremely rare that they end up aggressive to people. They're very affectionate, loving dogs, it's just that they end up in the wrong hands all too often. Any dog can be dangerous with the wrong training. So don't worry. Besides, they're very rare in the UK. Most people who claim to have pitbulls just have crosses.

Also, there's no such thing as an Irish Staff, it's just a made-up name to make them sound rare and worth more money when they're actually just crosses. She seems very big for her age, so probably a cross, but I wouldn't worry. My dog is a Staff x Presa Canario but he's very loving, intelligent, playful, etc. Just train her properly, put the effort in, and she'll be great whatever breed she is Big Grin

temperament is fine.. Bull mastiff's are very affectionate and also protective.. But you have to remember primrose is gonna be how ever you bring her up. She'll be lovely.

have you got a picture of your staffy on here jason.

im just finding the sharp teeth and biting hard to cope with at the moment, as she hurts the kids, i think she is just playing and being exited, and we are trying to follow the advise on the forums. but she doesnt have hurt when she gets you in the face.

ive had poodles and a bichon frise, as dogs and i can honestly say any mouthing by those type of dogs doesnt hurt, and doesnt cut the skin. some days i think im makng progress and then we have a bad day, and i feel like im back to square one again. but i dont want to give up, as i brought her, and feel a sence of responsibility for her welfare.

I think the kids do like her but she is far to rough with her teeth, if i can get on top of that, nothing else is gonna bother me that much x

I'm not an expert but I do not think he's a staffy x pitbull or whatever, although he's a good looking lad.
I think you will be ok with your pup and your kids, as long as the dog gets affection from the kids and do not let the kids smack and somewhat ''* off'' the dog, then you should be fine.
Some owners let their kids play with the dog to much, what I mean by playing is touching his face all the time, pulling him around, smacking him etc etc, you shouldn't let them do it, this is my opinion but like I said I'm not expert. smile

Staffs tend to be very...overly-playful. Everything she does at her age is playing. Just make a high-pitched yelping sound and turn your back on her when she bites. If she carries on, put her out of the room for a few moments. As for your kids, obviously keep a close eye on her when she's with them. If she looks like she's getting too excitable, step in and take her away from the kids and you play with her for a bit or give her a Kong or StagBar or something to chew so she can calm down before she nips one of the kids. It's hard work, but you just have to be consistent, do it every single time sne nips. Eventually she'll learn, they all do.

I mean, you have kids, so presumably there have been times when you're making progress with something and then one of your kids does something you were making progress with...but it's not back to square one, it's just a slip-up. It happens, but don't get down about it, just continue.

Don't worry. They come in all shapes and sizes. They are all different heights and weights. Some have long legs some have short legs. It really doesn't matter as long as she is a happy dog.

The term Irish Staffy is just a slang term used and means nothing, it was used at a time for owners who had pits but wanted to avoid hassle. There are loads of silly terms used for bigger Staffords.

When you take into consideration how many Staffords have been bred in the last few years it becomes easier to see why so many are different shapes/sizes.

I was concerned that Logan was far too heavy when comparing him to the breed standard but after reading this useful topic and seeing all the different statistics I felt a lot happier.

https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t30103-how-much-does-your-staffy-weigh

Also I just noticed you said primrose is 3/4 months old. At this age they are starting to grow from chubby little puppies into the awkward looking stage. Logan looked very "leggy" then too, but now he's filled out into his shape a lot more.

Hi, lovely pup you have there Love Struck

All I would say, is firstly ignore the info you mentioned off the net, its rubbish! ... apart from the fact that if you do keep mentioning the frase "pitbull" .. sooner or later you may well get a knock at the door, and your lovely girl could be seazed!!

She is obviously a staffy cross, with which other breed .. who knows .. especially as she is still only a baby Love Struck , but never the less a cross, so just bring her up right, love her, and enjoy!! Big Grin

Hi, My my big lad is a cross, and he has longer legs. We bought him as a staffy but as we did not buy with papers then we couldnt expect anything less really BUT just because he is bigger it just means bigger cuddles. I have had tyke nearly four years now we got him when i was pregant with our little boy. They are vertually inseprable. We have brought tyke and our son up to know how to behave around each other, ryan taking things of tyke, feeding him etc and ryan to show concideration to tyke like no leg pulling, no using him as a horse etc. But of course as with any breed in the world you just have to always take caution. I would reccomend not to be going round saying she could be a pitbull cross as this could have an effect like people reporting you etc.

She looks very cute!

I agree. People relate the word "pitbull" with the term "dangerous dog".

If anyone asks what kinda dog Logan is I always say Stafford. I even find saying he is a Staffy, or Staffordshire Bull Terrier has people respond with "oh they are vicious aren't they?" because they relate the words to what they see in the paper.

Unfortunately having papers doesn't really guarrantee anything either. After watching a show about BSL I worried and messaged the Kennel Club asking would my 5 gen papers protect me if that ever happened to me and they said they couldn't give legal advise but unfortunately the papers won't guarrantee anything but they would most likely help.

I agree. People relate the word "pitbull" with the term "dangerous dog".

All dogs in the wrong hands can become a dangerous dog, but sometimes you will get prejudice people, i would reccomend what mat said about just saying she is a staffy. I do get ooooo he is a big lad and i just reply that he likes his food lol! You will be fine, more you worry more it will bother you Smile

Hi, tyke has long leg syndrome Smile we bought with out papers so he has something mixed in with him, what it is i dont really know. Doesnt make him any more differant to the next pooch!

The pics of her remind me of tyke when he was small, he was very leggy and skinny. Like i said on my other post (pictures) more you worry more it will become a problem. she is a little beauty and as with most dogs they will grow out of the 'naughtys' with good guidance.

Also if you have only ever read bad press about pitbulls, just go on youtube or read postive things about them and you will see both sides to the story.

Don't worry about it. I'm not long new to the forum either and it does take a while to work out where everything is.

Your pup looks lovely. Enjoy her and keep us updated with how you are getting on! Smile

Such a cutie!! She looks vert content, they both do! Dont think you should have anything to worry about, just show the little ones the safest way to play and vise versus Smile

I think BSL stands for breed specific legislation BUT i may be wrong, am sure someone will deff know what this means.
