Demodectic Mange! HELP

[Minnie-Female-9Months]

Hey guys, literally just in the door from the vets.

The vet plucked some of Minnies hairs and confirmed she has Demodectic Mange (hate that word!) My worst fear confirmed, my heart rate genuinely increased when i heard her say it

Minnie Currently gets
1 tsp Coconut Oil (100% raw unrefined)
1 tsp Salmon Oil
1/8th tsp Probiotic Miracle
Alpha Sporting Puppy Hypoallergenic Dry food (soaked with 1/3 cup of milk)
The vet has also just given me Antibiotics to give her (10 day course 1 twice daily)
Also considering buying Milk Thistle and Vitamin E (400u).

Anyone any advice or thoughts about diet?

Ive got 3 questions at the minute on Demodex.

1. How hard is it to cure?

2. Has anyone any Tips or advice they can share?

3. Has anyone any Recommended Washes (Attacking it from both inside and out should help also?)

I've no experience of this Christian but thought it was treated by medication ?

I'm sure someone with experience will be able to add something.

Has your vet not prescribed treatment? They should have if not...

She said another method was a wash but i cant remember the name if it didn't make an improvement with the antibiotics she said we can try that, im sure i can ring her and ask?

I didnt find her very help ful she was very dry in personality just seemed to get through it quickly and I was on my way, I asked her to teach me to clean out her ears properly so I would be well able to do it myself and not hurt Minnie she just said use something oil based (baby oil ect) dont just use water?
(shes renound for being a good vet just a bit stuck up)

Im going to go to a different vet after her course of antibiotics just for a second opinion.

Hope ur dogs better soon i have no experience of mange either.

Ive never heard of that but I dont know much lol id ask your vet before giving your dog anything!

So far ive heard of "Ivmec" that isnt the right spelling of it tho..
and benzoyl peroxide shampoo, this opens the dogs pours and lets your get right down 5 or 6 layers of skin when the mites in-bed themselves and then use either an anti mite shampoo or a mixture of 1% hydrogen peroxide and borax solution (video can be found on youtube on how to make it)
MAKE SURE YOU DILUTE THE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE TO 1%

What ive learned so far about demodectic mange is -
1. Its caused by mites over populating on the dogs coat, these mites can live for up to a month so after it starts to look like it has cleared up it is best to maintain the routine for quite a while to be safe!
(every dog has these mites, a healthy immune system keeps it an acceptable level)

2. Boosting the Immune system is Key to Fighting the Mites.
Probiotics are helpful & Milk Thistle It specifically protects the liver against toxins (including some drugs and heavy metals), activates protein synthesis, and stimulates growth of new liver cells to replace those that are dead or damaged. Milk thistle also has strong antioxidant (destroys oxygen free radicals) and anti-inflammatory actions this is good to keep hot spots and flare ups to a minimal reducing scratching and a dreaded secondary infection!

3. Wash your dog once a week with with benzyol peroxide and special mite shampoos keeping bedding clean by changing ever 2/3 days obviously drastically decreases the number of mites that can get onto your dog! I know a dog shouldn't be washed often because the coat loses oils ect but you can give supplements like salmon/coconut oil to help restore this and a dry coat is a problem that can be fixed after demodectic mange!

A Little Update!

I ordered some (1)Benzyol Peroxide Shampoo and (2)Pierces Nustock.

(1) this is to open up the clogged and irritated pores and let (2) get right down to the deep layers of the skin to rid all the mites living down there.

I AM OVER THE MOON! with Minnies progress all the sores have stoped on her face and the light fur on her chest has since turned into a tuft of hair and first signs of hair have started on her belly in one week! (ive only applied them 2 times in the week as recommended)

MORE PROGRESS

Minnie has finished her course of probiotics and not much has changed in her diet she doesnt get ACV as often and Coconut oil has been taken out aswell purely because it costs too much i defo would recommend it tho!

She is currently getting general wellbeing multivitamins, now that the probiotics have regulated the amount of good bacteria in her shes able to make the most of vitamins!

General Well being multi-vitamins have hands down been the most cost effective   immune system builder (@ 3 euro per 90 tablets 1 tablet twice daily) im currently buying them in tesco!

Her hair is slowly but surely growing into a nice thick chest and her previously red/pink patches are now pretty much completely white!

Minnie is now 1 year on the 27th of Oct and has started her training in LIGHT weight pulling, with her professional harness, she is filling out lovely! she gets excited if anyone even lifts the harness all she wants to do is pull and please! Minnie trained along side her mum SKYE in her first day out in her mums old harness it was really great to see her taking to it so naturally!

glad minnies hair is a bit better i have no experience with mange and i hope someone comes along with a reply. There are a few owners that race their dogs and they have a better response than me.

many pups get over demodex on their own, eitger with no medication or just a course of antibiotics.

the washes are very harsh & should only be given if tgere's no other choice.

these 2 combined (wash and ointment) together are the best thing for mange hands down, this is coming from someone who cured a severely sick dog! while tackling demodex I supplement her with coconut oil,2 eggs a week, and some tuna now and again and her coat is super shiny and soft always has been since she got her diet changed.

* Mange is a more serious problem anyway,it can in the end kill a dog!
- id cure mange then repair coat after a dry coat is better than a mangy one !

i was given aludex wash for max when he had the dermodex mite and its a sod to get rid of, its taken ten washes so far but i would do anything for my staffie

I've just posted a new thread about Demodectic mange. sorry I didn't see this one first. Maybe the mods can merge my post with this.

Our 8 month old staffie got Demodex Mange the Vet put him on Ivermetic Liquid very small amount at first then slowly build up to 4.8ml everyday we had to go back every month for a skin scraping he needed 2 clear scrapings to be clear of the Demodex and lucky for us he is now cured long haul but so worth it. I tried everything before visiting the Vet in fact one Vet missed the diagnosis as its very hard to spot it under a microscope

Make sure and boost the immune system after using Ivermetic liquid, Ivermetic should really be used as a last resort for mange as tolerance builds up quickly. (Ivermetic is extremely effective but i would save it for an emergency/last resort) If using make sure to use immune boosting supplements like probiotics

Was so determined to getting Minnie to beat it, put quite a few hours in studying thankfully it paid off Minnie is in the best shape shes ever been in she still has a bald spot on her tail but i think its hereditary. Wont be long now before Minnie has her 3rd heat and first litter, the next topic to study!

You've done wonders with Minnie and to be honest, I would refer anyone with this issue to your threads seeing as you've had such a tough time and come through it with such a positive result

My Dexter had the mange as well he got it when his immune system was down because he was rescued. he had got kennel cough. Cured that then he got mange.The vet prescribed ivermetic of just 0.2ml in the morning for a month done a scrap test all gone no bald patches he said we caught it early. Asked him a few question about it because it is usually given to cattle but he put my mind at ease because he was getting a very low dose. Now he is in great shape people do be commenting on how great hid coat looks. If your going to use ivermetic I would give the smallest amount each day.

Hi everyone, Molly has just got this as well, the vets said that advocate spot on has been linked with reducing the effects of demodex. We switched Molly to Effipro (first time dog owner had no idea of the difference) did research on it ad Effipro looked ok in theory but within the fortnight of removing her from Advocate and applying effipro she had developed a Rash on her tummy, this dissapeared after antibiotics, once antibiotics stopped within a couple of days rash was back and bauld patches appeared, SHE HAS THE MANGE

We have put her back on advocate and this seems to have eased off a bit but i have just put in my order for Davis Shampoo as well.

She has got a dry patch behind her ear which is a bit flaky and i think she is irritating it by scratching any tips on what to do with this in the mean time, maybe a tiny bit of Olive oil, i heard that supposed to be good if you use a tiny bit.

As long as the skin isn't broken I'm sure a little olive oil will be fine. Sorry to hear she has mange, it really isn't a nice condition at all. Has the vet confirmed it is mange and if so what treatments?

After the initial wrong diagnosis of Puppy Pyoderma they did a skin scraping a fortnight ago and confirmed the demodectic mites

Unfortunatly for her she had a double whammy that visit as she also had a killer of an ear infection poor madam. So we left with antibiotics, ear drops and advocate, they also advise about the benzoyl peroxide shampoo but when they went to order in for me found out the product has been discontinued.

I have searched high and low for some as this seems to be what keeps coming back up in recommended treatments, just ordered some in from USA...The lengths we will go to for our pups.

My vet gave me hibiscrub to use instead of the benzoyl peroxide shampoo. She said it works the same, it flushes out the pores. I also used the aludex dip when Duke was a puppy.
I found keeping the skin really clean and daily brushing helped a lot
