Demodectic Mite
Noticed a few bald patches on Tess about three weeks ago, a few on her head and
a few on her body and legs, so made appointment at the vets she took skin scrapes
there and then and tested then straight away and was told it was Demodectic Mite,
she explained all about it but i kind of new what it would be,vet was really nice,
so she shaved the neck area at the back of her head, and applied Promeris Due and
told us to come back in 4 weeks, then she will do another skin scrape and see if
they have reduced in numbers and repeat the treatment till they have all gone.
Seems a little better not much, Just wish there was something else we could do
to help it a bit more to clear up, she is not that itchy with it it is just the
way it looks.
Got in touch with the breeder which is a good friend of ours and told him, he
got in touch with the other owners of the rest of the litter and all have no
signs of it, Tess was the unlucky one, my friend the breeder has since had
the Mother of Tess spade.
Has any other staffy owners had this unfortunate mange, and how was it treated
and did it clear up, Thanks

Re: Demodectic Mite
Hi, daisy is still having treatment for this but she is 2 and I think it's quite different when a pup has it rather than an older dog, her hair grew back really quickly though if that puts your mind at ease, hope she gets better soon.

Re: Demodectic Mite
It happens, unfortunately. All dogs have the mites, but in some pups it gets a bit out of hand.
The good news is that it will clear up with treatment, and you should start to see some improvement quite soon.

Re: Demodectic Mite
she was diagnosed last November and has been on the Mitiban dips and ivermectin which is an oral medication, i think both of those would be too harsh for pups! At first it made daisy really poorly. I have been adding apple cider vinegar to her food and gave her echinacea for a bit to try and boost her immune system, also the vet recommended melatonin supplement so she's been on that too, best to check with your vet before trying anything yourself though, with tess being young I'm sure it will clear up quickly and easily and hopefully she won't get it again. Daisy went in to be spade in jan and had a clear skin scrape but they said to finish the treatment so she's back in about 2 weeks for another scrape so fingers crossed!!

Re: Demodectic Mite
Glad Daisy was clear hope all goes well when she goes back in 2 weeks, Yeh i understand that treatment would be a bit much for Tess, you just want to do something to help them but you cant. Sorry for late replay and thanks Sazzle.

Re: Demodectic Mite
Try dermacton spray - it's a complimentary spray - natural oils, it will help reduce itching, antibacterial, antifungal etc and will promote hair regrowth x

Re: Demodectic Mite
Just a bit of a update, Took Tess back to the vets last Wednesday and
she took another skin scrape and she said she still has them but not
has much as the first skin scrape, so she repeated the same treatment
and we have got to go back in 4 weeks, must say she is looking a lot
better and her coat is growing back, soon have her back to normal with
bit of luck I hope, fingers crossed.

Re: Demodectic Mite
Our 10 month old girl Chloe developed a bald patch on her tail and then another right between her ears - it didn't seem to bother her but I was upset that it was spoiling her looks. The vet said it wasn't mites but he gave her some liquid to dab on at night and some steroids. It cleared up very quickly and the fur grew back but now it's started again in exactly the same two places. We have some liquid left so are dabbing that on at bedtime. Are white Staffies more prone to skin conditions? Her sister who is brindle never has anything, while Chloe sometimes seems a bit pink on her tummy especially after being on the beach and in the sea, and also in wheat fields. I'm hoping it's because she is so young. Any advice gratefully received! I'm thinking of giving them tuna occasionally for the oil - they love it but I don't know how good it is for them.

Re: Demodectic Mite
Daisy has sardines and salmon, But tuna only very occassionally because of the mercury in it.

The head & tail are typical places for puppy Demodex to strike. It isn't a problem unless it spreads or becomes sore & dry. To be honest, I'd be tempted to leave it now & see if it clears up on its own.
It won't hurt, though, to give her some sardines in oil every so often. I wouldn't give too much tuna because of the high mercury content.
