Pixie gets spayed - sad mum!! Empty Pixie gets spayed - sad mum!!

Post by charlottieg Mon Aug 22 2016, 09:12

Morning all,

So I've just got back from dropping my little girl off at the vets to be spayed Sad feeling a bit sad. They will call me later on today and hopefully she will be able to come home around teatime.

Do you have any tips on keeping her calm this coming week? got lots of chew bones and will make her some kongs up. How long was it before you let them go upstairs/on furniture again?

Thankfully Ive got the week off work so ill be able to take Ronnie out for lots of long walks so he doesn't pester her too much.

Thank you

Good luck! It's fun trying to keep just the one quiet but trying to keep two from not playing is mega fun! Wait for Ronnie to discover that Pixie's cone is perfect for dragging her round by Laughing

I'd say long walks for Ronnie and copious chews are a good way to go. Also, look at activity toys. Home made ones like hiding treats in closed cardboard boxes can be stimulating and keep them quiet for a while.

The only way i was able to keep my girl calm was filled bones/kongs and cage rest, it'll be at least a week or two before she can go back to staffy play though...on lead walks only, just be careful if you have another dog as they will try to clean the other dogs wounds so it wont just be her trying to get around the head cone.

Thanks for the replies. Yesterday went well, she was home late afternoon. Very drowsy and after gobbling down some chicken she slept the rest of the evening.

HOWEVER!!!!

Today was going really well to UNTIL I went outside to light our BBQ, came back in and poor Pixie was bleeding quite heavily from her wound!!! I've never been so scared in all my life!!! she was shaking a little too (just like my legs with panic!!!) I got straight onto the vets and they got me a appointment in the next 20 minutes....
Arrived at the vets, it was rather busy but thankfully i was only waiting around 5mins and then the vet that operated on her called us in. He had a look/feel at her (by now it had slowed a little). He said as scary as it looks it can be normal for some dogs. He put her a dressing on and gave her a sedation injection to help her relax tonight. He said to really try and make her stay calm as possible. Ive to go back in tomorrow afternoon so he can check her again. He said to me that the dressing would no doubt fall off but if she was to start bleeding again, put pressure on it like we do with a human wound.

I thought we had done so well relaxing today too, she's been on her bed most of the day or snoozing in the garden. The only thing she did was jump up on the sofa but that was earlier this morning nail biting (took my eyes off her 2 seconds!!)

I will keep you posted over the coming week...wish me luck!!

Ronnie has been so good with her, had a good sniff when she came home yesterday and then pretty much left her alone since. (I think he's secretly loving the extra walks he's getting over Pixie)

Another thing that really annoyed me when I arrived at the vets I had a towel around her (with blood on), most other patients were really good and giving up their quite seat for us but some silly woman let her kids come up in her face asking questions and screaming around her. She started barking so I said to them 'oh leave her alone she needs to stay calm because she bleeding' this was in clear ear shot of the kids mum but she choose to ignore me and let them annoy every dog in the vets waiting room!!! >Smile

Aww bless her, they do worry us don't they. With a bit of luck the warm weather will keep her from trying to do too much anyway but you will certainly still need eyes on her Rolling Eyes

As for the thoughtless woman in the surgery, some people don't have the sense they were born with angry

I hope she's ok and wasn't too wound up by the kids. Idiotic woman, letting kids shriek round an injured animal.

Trying to keep pups quiet is a nightmare, but it's great that you've got time off to keep them both distracted.

One good thing about the hot weather is it's making them easier to keep quiet.

Hi all

Pixie had her final check up yesterday with the vet (4th time this week!!!) all gone well, he doesn't want to see her again applause
Thankfully we had no more bleeding. The vet said to keep calm for another 5 days then try to not let her go mad on walks for a good month until her insides heal properly.
She's starting to get back to her old self now too, trying to dig holes in the garden and getting a bit giddy with Ronnie.

Im back at work Tuesday so I'm thinking it might be wise to separate them for a few days so they can't play fight when I'm out

Have a good weekend everyone!
