Crying puppy whilst out on walks.
Hi Everyone
My 7 month old Staffy x Ace was a rescue pup, we got him when he was around 5 months old.
He gets really excited when he sees his collar, harness and lead come out, but as soon as we put it on him he whimpers.. his tail is wagging and he is sat by the door. He jumps in to the car on his own and sits perfectly, but he still whimpers. When we get to the local country park he cries constantly as we're walking around, but his tail is still wagging, ears up, looking alert and looking full of energy like he always does, but can anyone shed any light on why he is whimpering?
I always check to see if he is in any discomfort, i.e. Collar to tight or his harness and I always check his paws and see how he is breathing etc.. all perfectly fine. He is on his lead still tho as we're still working on his recall. We always take toys with us and he plays with them, all whilst he's crying... His favourite toy is a Go Kart tyre and he carries it around on his walks with him... still crying tho.
He also has these moments where he will roll on the floor crying (tail wagging) and he won't get up. He will just try and mouth our hands, when he does get up he will just bark and roll on the floor again. I think this is him just engaging us in play, just wondered if this could add to the picture of his crying.
As he was a rescue, we obviously don't know how he was treated before we got him or if something happened to him which could contribute to his behaviour.
Can anyone help at all, I'd be grateful for anything
Thank you

Re: Crying puppy whilst out on walks.
Is it crying or is it an excited noise? I have met a couple of dogs who do a sort of whimper when excited.
If there are no other signs of unhappiness/discomfort/stress, then I would leave things as they are and see if it develops one way or another. Like with so many other things, a behaviour can often only be interpreted as part of a whole.
If you are still worried, try and take a bit of video so we can see. It'll be easier to have thoughts on it when we can see and hear it.

Some dogs do whimper with happiness, my boy sounds like he's in extreme pain when we're just about to leave the house! It could well be his way of expressing excitement, or it may be a bit of anxiety too. He looks a lovely little pup and I'm sure he'll calm down a bit when he's out with you soon. Remember staffys do make strange noises for no apparent reason!

Odd one, If there is no sign of discomfort then it would say to me that this is excited whimpering. A video would certainly help too

Hi All
Thank you! We're due to go out for a long walk after I've finished work, I will snap a video of him and post it later on

Re: Crying puppy whilst out on walks.
My pup is nearly 4 months, finally able to get him out and about l. Been taking him out for nearly 2 weeks now but he also seems to cry/whimper a lot and won't walk far from home. He was good for a bit but walking alongside but now sits and refuses to move. Offer him a treat he come takes it walks for a bit then starts the same behaviour. I then take him into the house and he does a number 2 straight away and I think is the issue. He does a number 1 but never a 2. Any advice on how to make him do his business outside?
