Ziva is eating her own poo help
Hi,
Ziva is 14 weeks old and is on Canagan dry dog food, but she eats her own poo or cow poo. Any advice how to stop this? It's as soon as she's done it she's there eating it. Don't know if I should change her food, was looking at orijen. She will leave it if you catch her in time. As for the cow poo, I'm keeping her on lead and working on her leave it command. I rescued her from rspca so not sure if this is due to her being in kennels or she lacking nutrients from the Canagan, I'm starting to worry about her tho. Thanks in advance x

Re: Ziva is eating her own poo help
Dogs do eat poo - favourites on the menu here are rabbit, chicken, cat, pony and, of course, the greatest gastronomic delight is fox poo.
I doubt if it is the dog food that's a problem - Canagan is good. Having said that, they don't seem to do a puppy version so it might be worth calling them to ask what they think. They might suggest a different variety for a while.
My guess is it's something to encourage her to grow out of. Try calling her over to you for a treat the second she finishes her poo so she associates moving away from it with something yummy to eat.

Misty goes mad for a bit of Goose poo- gives her a terrible tummy but she still eats it regardless.
Luckily she doesnt eat any other types but I agree with Liz- try to distract her with food.

It's not always down to food Pauline, there are many reasons why Ziva is doing this and it could be as simple as that's what she's always done!
Take a look at the article at this link, it makes for interesting reading:-

Re: Ziva is eating her own poo help
Daisy used to do this as a pup. I got her out of it by watching everytime she went. As soon as that poo dropped I would make a distraction noise, like a high pitch excited noise and call her to me and treat her straight away. After a few times she would run to me really excited and had totally forgot about the poo. Maybe this would work for you ????

Horse poo - considered delicacy by all dogs.
Eating own or other dogs' poo - could possibly be that (if this continues) you beef up her diet with some deluxe treats: eggs, sardines, meat. Or consider putting her on a raw diet. I know several dogs who have been cured of their dog poo fascination in this way.
