Rio's first week of Raw
Went to my local raw shop last saturday and the lady was so helpful, she's a canine nutritionist so helped me really understand what i was feeding him. She had 'complete' meals, little tubs of 500g including a mix of mince, bone and offal. I got chicken and that's what he's been on for a week, 250g in the morning and 250 in the evening along with the odd chicken foot or leg or egg.
He wolfed down everything but that didn't surprise me as he will eat anything. Poos became chalky so we backed off the bony treats. They became smaller and less smelly, but not any less frequent, i think he generally has a funny tummy anyway as our walks generally start off with a normal poo and then a runnier one after running around and being excited.
I went to my mum's in somerset and looked at her raw food shop and excitedly bought new things for him.
I bought:
-turkey mince to try and keep a bland base as we try new things
-minced beef heart/offal (i know heart doesn't count as offal as it's a muscle)
- tripe
-beed trachea filled with chicken mince
-salmon heads
-paddwack
Yesterday was our first DIY raw day. So i started off with 250g turkey mince, 50g tripe and a chicken foot. Went down a treat. He had paddywack and a couple of dried sprats in the day as treats.
Then in the evening he had a beef trachea with mince which he loved!
This morning he had 250g turkey mince, 50g tripe and a 1/4 of a salmon head, all gone very quickly.
My thoughts on it all:
He loves it and i love that, he gets really excited about this food now and he's learnt which freezer is his
Tripe is the most disgusting smelling thing i have ever a smelt, and I'm a nurse, so that's saying something
I think he's lost weight but looks healthy, i'm worried i'm not feeding him right. He's 25kg and we're working on a 2-3% feeding regime, which i've worked out to be around 500-750g a day, 2 x 250g mince a day, 50g offal, 50-100g bone.
Also salmon heads are VERY hard to cut up!
I'll take any points and advice anyone has to offer!

Re: Rio's first week of Raw
Wow, you've really embraced the raw thing and it's great to read that Rio thoroughly enjoys his food now. I would like to have tried this approach too, however, my OH won't entertain it
Look forward to reading how you adapt/adjust his meal times Kerry
