Saga - 13 old with cancer
Hello everyone
A few weeks ago I introduced you to my puppy Saga.
She is now 13 weeks old I have had her for 5 weeks.
I already love her so much and she makes me soo happy. She is so easy. She doesn't pee or anything inside, she can be alone for 6 hours already, she doesn't bite my furniture or anything. She is so good with kids, other dogs and other animals. She learned to sit, lay down, high five, etc. She is just perfect for me and makes me happy everyday. She is like a treatment for my depression.
But yesterday I got bad news. Last week we went to the vet to have her vaccinated and checked. I've noticed for a while that she walks funny and don't always walks on all 4 legs. I told the vet and we got a day for x-rays.
Yesterday she had some pictures taken of her right hind(?) leg. Don't know if thats what it's called in english. And they took some tests. She found out that Saga's leg was 2 cm shorter than the other and 3 mm thinner.
The vet called me later at the day and told me that my lovely puppy had a fracture in her thigh bone AND that she has cancer too. The fracture is from when she was a few days old and because the fracture had hit the growth lines it would mean that her leg wouldn't grow anymore. I dropped my jaw and started to cry. The vet says it's too early to amputate and that she has been in pain her whole life but she doesn't know about a life without pain so she is just use to it. I'm so sad and devasted.
She is so young and hasn't lived her life yet. She is just so perfect for me and I already love her so much. I spend as many hours as I can during the day and I always take her with me.
On friday I have to say good bye. In March I had to say good bye to my 12 year old labrador, and now my little pup.. I can't function right now and I can't think when I'm at school.
Maybe I overreact and maybe some would think "it's just a dog. You are not even bound to it" Oh yes I am. I'm so bound to her and I love her so much already. It's crazy.
They place where I bought her is sad too and offered my either the money back or a new pup some time in sep-oct.
I really don't know what to choose. What would you guys have done?
Right now I'm just sad and I know I have to spent the summer without my little girl. I had planned a lot for me and her. Places to go to, and people to visit. I would give her som good experiences.
I'm sorry for this sad and depressive topic. But I had to let it out..

Oh Maria I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. My heart goes out to you and dear little Saga. Just remember that you've given her a lovely, happy time with you and you're doing what's best for her now.
I wouldn't make any decisions just yet as to whether you get another pup or your money back, you need time to try to get over the shock and hurt that you've had.
We'll all be thinking of you. Keep in touch. There will be others that have experienced similar situations that can offer support.

Re: Saga - 13 old with cancer
Oh Maria, I just don't know what to write. This is terrible and I feel for both you and Saga. She is absolutely beautiful and its bringing me to tears just reading about her.
I absolutely do not think you are overreacting and anyone who says it's only a dog has never loved a dog. Dogs are a part of us and a family member. When I lost our beloved family Labrador after sixteen years together the whole family grieved. It's a loss of a family member and its a horrible thing to go through.
I wouldn't rush into making any decision with regards to getting a new dog. I'm sure you will know when the time is right. I'm so sorry the vets can't offer some hope to little Saga.
We are always here for you so please use the forum as much as you want. You will always have friends here to talk to xxx

Re: Saga - 13 old with cancer
I'm not surprised you're in bits, I know I would be too.
Poor little scrap, it seems so unfair, doesn't it? All that in such a short life. Just remember, though, that you have given her the best you possibly could in that time and you are doing the right thing by her now.
You sound a wonderful, caring person and I hope that in the future you will have another pup to love. As Emma says, though, take your time if you need to. We all have our different needs and if you feel that you would like another pup in a few months, then do it but don't feel obliged if it's not right for you.
We are here for you.

Re: Saga - 13 old with cancer
So very sorry to read this Maria. Life can be so unfair sometimes but you've given Saga a loving happy home and are now doing the kindest thing by her. You would have to be hard hearted to think they are just dogs, they aren't they are family.
As the others above have said, let yourself grieve before making any decision about another puppy. If you want to chat here please do, you'll always find a friend happy to listen.

Re: Saga - 13 old with cancer
Heart breaking news, so sorry, I can't imagine losing any of mine, Sorry for asking but i'm confused, you said she has cancer also but not that she is ill? so why do you have to say good bye friday? surely there are treatments as she is so young, dogs get around on three legs just fine so once old enough her leg could be amputated and she will be fine and pain free and until then her pain can be manageable.

Re: Saga - 13 old with cancer
Thank you. You are all so sweet and supporting!
Today is the day, and I'm sitting at school fighting not to cry. It's really hard for me to function today..
I'm gonna miss her so much but I know it's the right thing to do. She has been in pain for way too long without me knowing and the vet says she never would have a painfree life
I'm just so sad that such a beautiful, lovely and happy pup has to leave the world so soon. I'm sorry that I didn't noticed that she was in pain earlier so that she wouldn't have to suffer for so long.
I'm sorry I can't give her that long happy and loving life I planned to give her.
I think I will use the summer to decide if I'm ready to a new pup in september/october or not. I won't rush into get a new pup at this moment, because I have to get over this first. So I think I will use my summer to think about it and feel inside if I'm ready.
Maybe I'll give an update later. She is going to the vet at 4:30pm (danish time)
Again, thank you for all the support, it means a lot to me!

Re: Saga - 13 old with cancer
Thank you all. It has been some hard days for me. I can't go through the door without getting sad because she isn't there to wiggle and welcome me with all her happiness. It's crazy how hard this is for me thinking about that I only had her for 5-6 weeks. But she really was a match for me, I can really feel it now when she's gone.
It all feels so empty. The house, inside me, in the garden, on my walks.
I live alone and all I had to come home to was her.
It's just empty and lonely. I really miss her.
I think I need this summer to get over this and hopefully I'm ready to welcome a new pup around sep/oct. No pup can ever replace Saga, but I can make a new friend to share my life with if I'm ready.

Re: Saga - 13 old with cancer
You poor thing- it must be so hard for you. The only consolation you have is that sweet Saga is no longer in pain and is running free over the rainbow bridge. You put her needs above your own, that is true love.
When the time is ready for a new pup you will know. We are all here for you.
Take care xx

Such a special girl will never be replaced but a different special one later in the year might well help fill the hole. x
