Re: New staffy puppy
I am excited yes. Slightly nervous owned family dogs before but never one of my own and never a staffie.my husband is the one that chose the breed so I am slightly nervous what with there 'bad' rep. I am a firm believer that there is no bad dog just bad owners lol. So any tips on how to support my pup into the best dog he can be would be great.

Re: New staffy puppy
I've only ever had family dogs until Katy, my hubby picked her too!! They are the most clever, intelligent, loving dogs you could ever wish to meet they learn very quickly, love routines but the most important thing to decide is where you want your furbaby to sleep!!! if you let them sleep on your bed, that is IT, no going back!!!!!!!!!!

Re: New staffy puppy
OK thanks for the warning on that. To begin with we are looking to use a crate at night and when we are not there. Don't want to risk any cat/puppy fights especially when I'm trying to catch some zzzz lol. It's nice to hear some lovely comments about the breed they seem to get such a bad press. Bit likelly marmite I suppose u either love them or hate them lol

They are amazing dogs, no bad dogs just bad owners, they will give you love in abundance, shower you a lot every day, laughs , companionship, and just when you think you have a disrtructable toy they will prove it is not. Love them

Hi from me and mine
My top tip - training! You only want to do tiny bits early on but remember that they are learning all the time, and something that is 'sweet and doesn't matter' now might not be so cute in a fully grown dog.
Have a look at these videos, they're great and will give you loads to work on.

Re: New staffy puppy
Hi Steph from me, Daisy and Ralph. I have owned my girl for ten years now and I am a real ambassador of the breed, they are such loyal loving dogs, especially with kids. Got Daisy when my kids were in nappies and she has never been anything but totally reliable.
People who say negative things don't even know the breed, people who do know the breed will tell you the truth which is all good. Very exciting times ahead. Good Luck x

Re: New staffy puppy
hello & a very warm welcome!
you're so right - the problems generally do come from the owners, not the dogs. however, do remember that your pup, so sweet and tiny now, has VERY sharp puppy teeth which he will use in play and 'discovery' of things around him. you will need to be firm, but gentle & fair right from the start. if you need any help, please do ask as there are lots of people here with excellent ideas on how to stop behaviours that you don't want to escalate! be reassured, though, that the nipping ISN'T aggression, it's the only way he knows to communicate/play etc. Try to make all your training 'force-free' and reward based as you'll get a much better result in the long term.
they are a lovely breed, and will repay your hard work over the first few months with unlimited love, and a good few laughs as well!
