Mild Dandruff
Hi Just noticed that Marley has a little dandruff problem:( has any one had similar and what would be your recommendations. I guess an appropriate shampoo ? and would a cod-liver oil capsule once a day with his meal help as a prevention.
Many thanks
Rob and of course Marley

Re: Mild Dandruff
I would try a little Coconut oil rubbed in to his skin/coat and also feed an oily fish like sardines maybe once or twice a week.
The coconut oil has to be virgin organic and can be given internally too

Re: Mild Dandruff
Gizmo gets this when I've had to wash him too often (one week he rolled in dead things every single day). Like Shegsy says, oily sardines or makerel really helps.

Re: Mild Dandruff
regular grooming also helps apple cider vinegar has great benefits and a raw egg 2x a week will give a nice shiny coat if you are unsure of allergies use oatmeal dog shampoo or tea tree

Hi Rachel thanks for the reply I feed him Arden Grange Adult 125 grams twice a day. I did speak with a veterinary nurse earlier today who recommended adding Omega 3 fish oil with his meal once a day would help.
Thanks
Rob

Re: Mild Dandruff
The fish oil will certainly help Rob. Avoid washing Marley with shampoo too often as well, that can strip the essential oils. If he gets muddy either groom him or wash in warm water

Re: Mild Dandruff
Thanks Ian, I rarely wash dogs unless they decided to have a roll in something ;-). As you said a groom is normally enough, or I let them have a swim in our near river. Marley has not been tempted yet hahahah had a paddle but did not venture to deeper waters lol.

Re: Mild Dandruff
I have always found that diet has made my dogs scurfy in the past. I know people bang on about it but raw food is amazing for allergies and scurfiness etc. I feed mine natural instinct raw and it's amazing. It also massively reduces farts, which is a massive bonus lol x

Re: Mild Dandruff
Fish oil is great for coats, as it coconut oil. When I worked in kennels we fed Arden grange to the dogs and I didn't notice any major problems with coats but each dog will be different. Raw can be great, but you do need to research thoroughly before changing them over. Nutriment is a good raw complete that takes the complexity out of the DIY methods. Otherwise, I feed wainwrights grain free trays to my girl who had allergies and skin troubles and her skin is great now, always get compliments about how soft she is too! Arden grange is an okay, mid range food, but if your budget can afford it he could probably have a bit better

Re: Mild Dandruff
Hi Rob, I'm new to Raw feeding so people on here can prob give you more info about it. My puppy had a squirty bottom and vets told me about Natural Instincts raw and it has been a godsend. I don't feed all the other stuff with all the bone but I hear it is good for their teeth.
Have a look on the diet section on here, there will be lots of people more knowledgeable than me. x

Re: Mild Dandruff
Thank you Clare I will have a look it's certainly a good site to pick up lots of useful tips .
Thanks for that Rachel I actually feed Marley Arden Grange now he does enjoy it. It's just I have heard so much good press on raw food. Since I put the post up I have been giving him a Omega 3 capsule ever other day with his meal, this has sorted is dry skin issue and I must admit his coat is looking rather good to :-) but we do still have those room clearing farts hahaha normally at the end of the day lol

Re: Mild Dandruff
Rob, just out of interest has Marley got any Crossguns in his family tree, he has that look about him. My Daisy's dad is Valgo Cassanova at Crossguns and your boy looks very similar. Clare

Re: Mild Dandruff
Hi Clare I am sorry I would not know his pedigree. I adopted him from the RSPCA his past is a little grey. I am afraid poor chap had been in another kennels before the RSPCA took him in.
