Ouch - flaming motorbikes
For a good few weeks now I have not been able to walk Milo due to a badly strained knee so hubby has been doing them. Well today hubby was out so I thought I would give it a go as my knee seems alot better so I put his long training lead on with his harness so he could have a bit more freedom and set off down the green which is wide but has a service road either side so I can't let him off. If we take him down the park and he sees a dog he's off and he plays so rough with them bowling them over etc and won't leave them alone.
All was fine til a very loud motorbike suddenly came by us out of the blue and I didn't even have any warning as Milo took off after it at speed with me attached on the other end luckily as he would have caused a road accident / killed! I remember what felt like flying through the air and landing on my side in the mud with all the stuffing knocked out of me. I couldn't get up at first (as I'm an oldie) and Milo decided to say sorry by jumping on me - gerrooffff you .......!!! A very kind couple stopped in their car and asked if I was okay bless them.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry but I was very shaken and weepy and took me a long time to hobble home (knee now bad again )
I feel like my staffy walking days are over and have to leave it to hubby now. Having said that I am now worrying about poor Milo ie not getting enough exercise etc., and should we try to re-home him. I don't feel that I can do that tho as its so unfair. He's already been in two homes and i love him so much - he's my mate.
I can't afford dog training as we're pensioners...any suggestions?

Re: Ouch - flaming motorbikes
Oh Jenny that sounds so painful- hope you are ok!
Take a deep breath and try not to think about rehoming Milo. Today was an accident- honestly Im in my thirties and am strong however I cant even tell you the amount of times Misty has had me over so don't feel like its an age thing, it can and does happen to us all! Misty has even introduced my hubbys face to the floor in the park before when she has taken off and he wasn't ready for the sharp tug!
I hope your knee gets better very soon and you can resume walking with Milo. In the mean time do you have any friends or neighbours that could help with walking him? Maybe they walk their own dog and could take him with them on a walk. If they had a dog that walks nicely (oh Misty one day you will be that dog!!) maybe you could all go out together and they could walk Milo and you could walk theirs? Its just a thought. A guy I work with in his fifties- him and his wife have a neighbour with a staffy and the guy and his wife walk the dog most evenings as they like walking.
Hope you get better soon

Sorry to hear of your accident Jenny and hope you feel better soon. As Emma says, you'll feel better in a few days and I'm sure will be able to work something out to help you both. Milo means too much to you and I can see he is your soul mate. In the meantime big hugs to you and Milo

Re: Ouch - flaming motorbikes
I'm so sorry on what has happened.
We have a huge field at the back of us which leads onto the Derby canal path which in the day is absolutely ideal for walking your dogs on. But in the evenings/nights it becomes the ideal spot for local idiots to speed around on with thier dirtbikes illegally I may add.
I dread my runnings in the coming weeks with them when Tia is able to be taken out for her walks as I know how startling they can be for both us humans and dogs alike. Don't be put off by what has happened. Take some time aside to rest up and regather. I wouldn't look too far into rehoming though. That would be a huge shame for the both of you as you seem like such a great match.
Take care now.

I'm sorry to read this Jenny. Give yourself plenty of time to recover, I'm certain that your Staffy walking days are far from over. Milo will calm down eventually (they all do) and remember, an injury to a major joint takes time to heal properly whatever the age.
I can understand that you only want to do the best by Milo but I'm sure he would much rather be with you

What an awful experience because of one idiot, I'm so sorry ! I hope you recover quick and I'm sure Milo would LOVE to stay with you, hopefully you can work something out short term for walks, just remember it's just happened and need to think through all options. Thinking of you, take care xx

Re: Ouch - flaming motorbikes
Arr thanks everyone - you made me feel alot better. I got up this morning and thank god my knee is almost back to normal and only my arms ache now. I feel so much better.
I will never ever give Milo up - thats decided. It will be OH's job now tho to walk him and I will tag along and try not to moan at him being too strict with him lol.
I have one of those harnesses Mia05 they seem ok - but hes in his usual harness now as hubby doesn't like the other one
Perseverance is the key I suppose. Thanks again everyone for your kind thoughts and words - xxx

Re: Ouch - flaming motorbikes
Oh great to hear your knee is feeling better, as Crystal said make sure you look after it with physio, support and/or docs. A supervisory role in the dog walking sounds perfect for the next wee while
While I remember - after Una sent me flying a couple of months ago, the doc told me about this site for musculosketal injuries http://www.nhsinform.org/msk/, there's a moby app too. Not sure if it's going to be of any use but wanted to share it on.

Re: Ouch - flaming motorbikes
Thankyou everyone for your kind comments - I really appreciate it. I'll just rest up and try again in a couple of weeks.
One thing that worrys me even more is when I watched from the window my husband walking Milo down the green a lady came up to him and was talking to him but not being near enough to stroke Milo - then when hubby walked away he obviously relaxed his extender lead cos Milo jumped at the lady and bit her sleeve - even though his tail was wagging before. This is worrying me now what with everything else., I think it's an insecurity thing with him? He's done it before with the neighbour's daughter who doesn't like dogs and wouldn't stroke him while chatting to me at the fence so Milo jumped up and bit her sleeve too. Oh dear

Re: Ouch - flaming motorbikes
When you say 'bit', Jenny, do you mean real bite or play bite?
Guest- Guest
Re: Ouch - flaming motorbikes
sounds like a play bite to me milo may be sensing the persons nervousness and trying to get their attention, if at all possible anybody u meet while with milo get him to sit and for them to give him a treat ONLY when he sits and is calm . the sleeve biting has to be stopped hen asap otherwise someone may take his playing the wrong way one day particularly with kids . its never easy getting a dog out of a habit but you will get there do the sitting and treating with every person whether you think he will nip or not he will soon get the message. know what u mean with the other half saying you baby the dog because I speak to her in a baby voice you know what he got told don't you? can't say here its a family forum

Re: Ouch - flaming motorbikes
Hi Liz and Mia - thanks for that. I was watching from my lounge window when it happened. OH was holding Milo back while he was talking to the woman. Milo's tail was wagging & he was straining to get to her. Then as I say as hubby was walking away Milo got to the woman he jumped up and bit her coat sleeve. It looked like mild nervous aggression to me.
I know I shouldn't go on but OH is always randomly chucking 'cheesy bites' at Milo on his walks for no reason and he does things like reward him at roads when he says 'Over' and gets to the other side of the road instead making him sit and wait and reward before going over? In my mind he's teaching Milo to charge across the road and I can see problems in that when we're even older than we are with walking sticks he will pull us over but he won't listen being and ex Police dog handler etc., Enough said - rant over lol

Ohhh can see why you have issues with the way your OH is handling Milo. I tend to agree with you Jenny, reward the action not what it's going to be.
