Anxiety in the car and chasing motorbikes
Hello,
Troy moans and groans when in the car. The only way I have stopped him from doing it is making him concentrate on treats. If he remains quiet I give him one and he keeps quiet focusing on them. If I have no treats though, he will moan, whimper and jump around on the back seat..any tips?
Secondly, motorbikes. When he see's them he wants to run after them. Starts dragging on the lead etc and whimpering sometimes. The louder the bike, the crazier he gets.
Any tips on this?
Ta.

Re: Anxiety in the car and chasing motorbikes
This probably won't help you much, but here's my tuppence worth.
Kuchar is now 9 months old (how old is Troy?) We got him at 3 months old and he was fine in the car UNTIL we started taking him to training classes, which were unfortunately "clicker" based and involved stuffing him with treats every few seconds. The result was that he was ALWAYS sick on the way home, and ever since has been anxious about travelling in the car - panting etc. We ALWAYS have to bodily lift him into the car now and he still hates it, although the sickness is now abating thankfully now that he is a little older. But he still hasn't travelled more than 10 miles in the car!
If this rings any bells, that may be the reason - fear of car sickness. wish I'd never taken him to a "stuff him full of treats" training session.
Motorbikes - maybe the hectic noise of them gets him excited?
Sorry I can't help any more.

Have you thought of using a travel crate?

Not something i have ever experienced, but when you go in the car i am assuming you go to a spot to have a walk or somewhere exciting?
If so he will just be like a little kid saying "Are we there yet?"
Try just driving around and going back home, no walks.

Suki has both of these issues and we haven't completly solved either. The whining in the car is out of excitement to go play. She will only do it on the way there and never on the way back.
She just flat doesn't like motorbikes so we will shorten the lead up when we hear one and distract her with a treat

Is it out of fear or just doesn't like the noise do you reckon? Saw el ceaser doing something about this kind of thing. I'll give you one guess as to what that thing was, if you get it wrong you must post Suki to me.

Re: Anxiety in the car and chasing motorbikes
Well Troy stays at my Mothers house Mon-Fri until I get back from work now, so most of the time I guess he will be anticipating going there and seeing my brothers dog.
But he has done it since day 1 to be honest. Maybe it is a bad memory as it is how I took him from his previous home..I dunno.
In regards to bikes, he doesn't bother with any other automobiles, just seems to be mopeds and motorbikes! He just wants to chase them.

Re: Anxiety in the car and chasing motorbikes
I think the whinning is out of anticipation. I've tried everything I can think of from walking her beforehand, giving her things to chew and she will still do it.
The motorbikes I think is related to the sound. I've tried getting her used to them like we did with the vaccum and playing the sound on the computer with no luck.
They could just be quirks, we;ve learned to just live with them but if you find a solution please let us know

Re: Anxiety in the car and chasing motorbikes
If you see my post below I have the same problem in that my dog has been fine for 9 months and has now started lunging at cars/bikes. I have been advised to distract him with lots of noise - whooping and calling him, and lots of treats whilst the traffic goes by.

Re: Anxiety in the car and chasing motorbikes
Have you thought about a dog seat belt that attaches to a harness?
We have the same problem too, she was fine always in out the car since she was 8weeks then just recently she's got really bad whimpering and other random noises and jumping about. We got her a seat belt (leopard print to match of course lol) an that keeps her still at least and she can still see whats going on.
She's still whimpers - only on the way somewhere - and i actually said to my oh the other day its probs just her version of "are we there yet?" so glad to see sum1 else thinks that too!
