Very little to be honest. His hormone level will drop but be prepared for it to take a little time.

You might or might not see a level of calmness, I think the jury is out on that one

neutering may or may not calm a dog down - it all depends on the individual dog's character and training. other factors such as food can also play a big part in a dog's over-enthusiasm!

it will certainly reduce his testosterone levels, but if he has already 'learnt' to follow the scent of a bitch in heat he might still do so afterwards. i'm not saying don't get him done, just don't expect a miraculous change. it might stop him chasing a bitch's scent, but it might not!

But... even if he does still run off, if you get him neutered you will at least know that he's not fathering an unwanted litter somewhere. I don't actually think it's unkind at all, by the way. It is in our minds, but you have to remember that the dog has no idea what has been done and he has no concept of a change in his male status. The only thing he will know is that he's a bit sore for a couple of days.

Are you sure it's because of bitches he's running off, by the way, and not just because he now knows he can take off and have fun running around?

well after mia being speyed I did have peace of mind knowing could take her out without being chased by all manner of dogs , I did notice her calm considerably afterward but she didnt lose her characteristics they are out of sorts for about a month but thats to be expected . I was just glad we would get peace and quiet on walks .

We are just waiting til Arthur is a year old in July then he will be neutered. We would have had it done sooner, but the breeder was horrified at the thought. He said the lack of testosterone would stop his head developing properly and his muscles.Dont know how true it is,but will do as they advised us.His zoomies are something to behold,he goes absolutely bonkers and no power on Earth will stop him, only the biscuit tin opening. Its basically to stop him running off after a bitch we want it done,he hasn't shown any inclination yet.

not all dogs will run off after bitches, but i understand what you mean.

the testosterone won't make a difference to head or muscle size, but will make a difference to his temperament. if you neuter too early he won't get that testosterone burst that gives him confidence & self-assurance. he may also end up taller and narrower.

a year is okay, but 18 months or even 2 years is better!
