Surprised Weigh in

Post by Jenc Sat Mar 12 2016, 20:36

Popped in the vets the other day to get Katy's worm/flea treatments without her, they asked if she had put on weight since her last weigh in. I wasn't sure but said she had put on a bit, last weight was 25.1kgs. OH playing with her the other night said, when I get a chance get her weighed so he knows how much he has to pull around when they are playing Laughing Anyway I had to pop into PAH today to get her food & they have the new vets bit with a lovely set of scales. Of course you can weigh her they say, 27.4kgs ish Surprised Surprised Surprised but the vet nurse was all hands on & said she's in great condition. Her father was a Big boy so she obviously takes after him, someone called her fatty the other day & I said if you can find any fat on her she will be on a diet!!!!!

Yes she is a big girl Rach, her parents were both staffies but like I said her dad was really muscly. There could be a mix further back but I don't know Big Grin She has low fat treats & lots of exercise but if she starts getting fat she will be on a diet, I hate seeing fat dogs!!!!!

Can I be honest, Jen? I think looking at some recent pics that there are a few kgs there might be better vanishing. Sorry, Katy...

Post by Guest Mon Mar 21 2016, 20:38

How tall are Katy and Rio? I know she's not as muscular, but lab sized Nola is about 28kg, and I'm making sure she doesn't put on any more as I think she's at the top end of where she should be. Chaos is tall for a staffie - he's a cross - and he is about 23kg.

Seriously, I think it's really easy to see our dogs as a good weight because we're used to seeing them like that, and because quite a lot of dogs are overweight we see a bit chubby as normal. It's also easy to call it muscle. There are some helpful photos here:

Rio is around 20inches tall from shoulder blade to paw, he's a 4/5 on that large dog scale. He's a cross and was just below 30kg when we got him, rather tubby, then he got exercised a lot and went down to 24/25 and looked too thin so he sits comfortably at around 26/27kg now

I put extra kilo's on around the middle during Winter so don't worry Katy you're not alone !!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

I have been laughing as my OH really wants Koda to get to 20KG, every few weeks he looks like he's filled out but if he has he must be losing it somewhere else as he's gone from 19.3KG to 19.4KG over a 5 month period, so I think the 20KG mark is a looooooong way off (if ever!) !!! Laughing

Liz, Katy scored 4/5 on that scale but I will be keeping a close eye on her. Vets did say she was in great shape.
Here's her stats; Height to shoulder 17"
                        Neck girth 18"
                        Chest depth behind armpit 31"
                        Waist 26"
She is run twice a day, 3 times in summer & lots of tuggy games in between Big Grin Love Struck

Post by Guest Wed Mar 23 2016, 16:16

Ok, to compare, Chaos's measurements are:

Height to shoulder 20"
Neck 18"
Chest 28"
Waist 21"

I need to double check, but I think his weight was around 24kg (not 23 that I said before). I'll pop him in to check later. I'd say Chaos is a 4. He's slim without ribs being visible unless he's stretching.

I've just found a dog BMI calculator.

http://petsci.co.uk/calculating-your-dogs-bmi/

According to that, Chaos is underweight by a fraction. His BMI comes out at 96, with 104 being the bottom of the correct weight range. More tea then, Chaos!

my girl is 18.5kg 18" and my boy 21 kg 19.5" to the withers. they are both lean and athletically muscled. will try and get the rest of the stats tomorrow. may seem a bit on the slim side to some they dont half have some power.
my lass Weigh in 20150511_180852_zps4ibhs6it

Marley is a bit chunkier but has good definition, and winter/spring is our working time so they always have a bit less on them. summer they put on about half a kilo as i cant run them in the heat

Your guys probably also look slimmer because of their breeding, Nath. Laska looks amazingly fit!

Chaos has just been weighed - 24.7kg, so a BMI of 99 which is near as anything fine. But after popping in at the vet he came to the farm shop with me, where he was stuffed with treats by everyone so that'll take care of the difference!

Gizmo's got quite the hour-glass figure from above, so looks a bit 3ish. I think he's a solid 4 going by that chart from the side and I can feel his ribs through a little squish but not much.

Yeesh, looking at that chart and thinking about it, I see an awful lot of 6s and 7s in the parks. Bit hard to tell if Long dogs are underweight when they're so ribbylooking as breeds.

Surprised Re: Weigh in

Post by Rachel33 Thu Mar 24 2016, 23:07

Hmm.. Katy does seem to be an odd shape? She's shorter than Bug but her chest and waist seem much larger? Bug's measurements, also to compare:
Height to shoulder: 18"
Neck: 16"
Chest: 25"
Waist: 19"

She weighed 18.5kg the last time she was at the vets. According to the BMI calculator she is slightly underweight, but the last time she was at the vets she had gotten up to nearly 20kg and they said she could do with losing a little. My vet really hates fat dogs though, so he would prefer to see them on the slimmer side.

I would say that Bug is a 4 on that scale. Maybe pop on a photo of her from above, like the dogs on the scale so that we can get a better idea of her shape? Only if you want to of course! I'm intrigued lol!

Today a random stranger on the bus if Giz is part whippet 'because he's so skinny' and then in the park someone asked me if he's been ill cos he looked like he'd lost weight. at wits end

I should have said that the stripes on his fur are slimming. Recent vet weigh-in 22kg.

OI! He does have the high waist thing going on Laughing

^btw that should say 20kg, not 22kg.

Gizmo has clearly taken the comments to heart, so far today he's stuffed his face with birdseed from some guy in the park, and cleaned out his bowl twice.
