PIT BULL...
Yesterday I met a chap and his lovely staff.I asked him why he had a muzzle. He told me that 10 dogs including his one were taken from the local area(Hereford) and labelled pit bull type.He told me that his dogs dad is kc reg and his mum is a staffy with no papers. He then told me he was shocked how he was treated and had to pay to get the dog back.He also told me that none of the other owners had challenged the police to get their dogs back. They were put down!
The dog was a lovely staffy who blue with white patches. The dog was 19 inches tall and because of this he was labelled pit bull type. The dog looked just like a normal staffy and was soft as muck.
The police ordered the man to muzzle the dog at all times when in a public place and to be kept on a lead.
They also neutered the dog and tattooed a number on him.
I'm now getting worried that the same might happen to me.Tilly was 19" tall when last measured. Please advise me.
I could not be with out my dog.

Re: PIT BULL...
yea anything over 17" / 18" could be classes as a type, only thing you can train her the right way, keep her out of trouble & dont put fancy coller or harness on

Re: PIT BULL...
why are you confuse? any dog over staffordshire bull terrier kc standard can be class as a type.
only thing you can do is:
there not much else you can do, i wouldn't worry about it
only thing you can do is:
- Dont go around saying you have a type.
- Dont show him off with fancy coller or harness.
- Make sure he she dont get trouble.
there not much else you can do, i wouldn't worry about it

Well they had time to deal with this chaps dog and the others.I met him a pets at home. The cashier said that he's a really nice fella who really cares for his dog and buys him the best food and is always looking to better the care of the dog.He had some frozen food when I was talking to him and the dog was very healthy looking also well groomed so have no reason to doubt the cashier.

Re: PIT BULL...
I would of thought someone tell the police he had a pitbull type there no way the police would of knew if someone didn't tell them. police cant check every house/flat for tpye just impossible.

if they police come knocking at your door they will be taking dog & you will have to goto court and prove your dog it's not pitbull & friendly to joe public..
Re: PIT BULL...
well in that case harvey is definitely of 'type' then as he is over 18" tall and over 18kg, but he is so well behaved and that is really the best you can do.

Where do you measure from ? top of the head, I have no papers for either dog =( i cant believe how they can be ''typed'' as a dangerous dog because of how tall they stand! thats like saying anyone over 6ft are dangerous and shouldnt be allowed out in public! stupid =(

You measure from the withers (the highest point of the shoulder) to the ground, not the head.
If you have pedigree papers for a tall staff, then always keep them handy, together with pics of the dog as a pup & through the growing stages to show it's the same dog. Try to keep in contact with the breeder so that will testify that your dog is a staff. If your dog is a cross breed, tell them he's a staffy x labrador & that accounts for his size. If you got him from a rescue centre kepp the rescue papers that show him to be a staffy cross, and friendly/able to be adopted with no aggression issues.
But above all, keep your dog well behaved & out of trouble. Don't attract attention either by behaviour or his looks. As Steve says, if you put a fancy studded collar or harness on him, people will look!
If you are stopped, be polite (no matter how badly you want to be rude) because if you upset the cops, they'll find an excuse to take your dog. Smile nicely, say that you understand their concern, but he's a pedigree (or labrador cross, whatever applies), and would they like to see his papers? If so, offer to take the paper work to the police station as soon as possible.

Re: PIT BULL...
Eugh this is rediculous!!! .. This is why i muzzled my previous staffy and had him on a short lead so they had no excuse to say oh his a dangerous dog .. yes he was dog aggressive but i knew that and took it into consideration when deciding on restraint to use aka (muzzle, harness, short lead etc)
My two now are never of the lead because i dont want the police to use that as an excuse, they also have normal collars and harness's a strong normal harness does just as good of a job as a big leather and gold 'staffordshire' harness (not saying they are bad if you use em'! get that across lol), i dont put mine in those bcuz i feel thats part of the sterotype aswell unfortunatly!.
ive been fine with police around my area tho' LUCKILY and touch wood it stays that way! .. i even had two women police officers on there usual walk round look at vinnie an go "aww his gorgeous!"
I have vinnies pedigree to proove his breed and still in contact with owner .. i dont have a pedigree for skye however still in touch with breeder aswell as it been stated on her vet pack her breed etc.

Re: PIT BULL...
I just measured Henry he's approx 13'' tall and weighs in at 16.7kg!
Missy is approx 9 and half inch and 13.3kG.
Henry is known to the local police, as my partner is part of a local residence association and the police attend the meetings, he gave Carl pointers on how to train Henry when we first got him.
also we had to get him a leather harness cos he pulled nylon ones apart, from pulling on the lead. now he walks on collar with a nylon lead. but there should be no ''stereotype'' only understanding. my friend has a gsd x lab and needs a leather harness he's huge and looks far more intimidating than any staff ive seen.

Re: PIT BULL...
we live between Worcestershire and Herefordshire, so I think it's still the same area as yours!
Mambo is about 19-20 inches tall but he's chipped as Staffy (although we still think he may be a cross, possibly boxer). he's a rescue and we've got all documents from the shelter confirming that.
if your dog is chipped as Staff, I think there shouldn't be any problem, isn't it enough proof?

Re: PIT BULL...
Should be! same as the vet packs etc stating your dog is a staffy surely a vet is going to know .. shouldn't have to proove the breed of your dog wherever you turn .. you yourself know your dog is a stafford and you bought a stafford, why would we buy a 'pitbull' knowing full well they are a band dog and will at sompepoint more than likely get caught and that dog has no more future, i honestly dont know how people can do it.spuker1 wrote:if your dog is chipped as Staff, I think there shouldn't be any problem, isn't it enough proof?

Re: PIT BULL...
Oh for pete's sake, how bl**dy well ridiculous
Do your cops have nothing better to do...?
I just measured Kita and even though she is stooping with her arthritis she still measured in at 13.5", Izzy is 17".
I had a lot do to with PBT's in the 90's before I got Kita, funny thing I was looking at their old pics with my stepson tonight and there is no way that you could "confuse" their distinguishing features with my two staffs.
Forgot to add - unless you chose to.

they only go around if someone report the house owner as a pit they just dont have the time or funds to look for type of dogs

are they real papers? you may get the odd kc dog 17" but anything over they must be fake papers.
Re: PIT BULL...
So if they got a report of a likley PBT, they just rock up at your house and hassle the living daylights out of you or your family and basically don't take no for an answer even if you have papers to prove otherwise....?

Problem here in the UK a lot of staffys don't have papers for various reasons.. So they can take your dog for up to 6 month ( without you being able to visit ) and you have to prove it's not a PBT type..

With Chloe she is def genuine KC, had to change address with the kennel club once and her registration docs came from them a few weeks after purchase... My mates girl Tosca is the same litter so must be genuine... Chloe also has a defra pet passport listing SBT

Thats what I mean, the breed standard isn't always guarantee'd to prove anything
Cos mine has a KC out of standard... and anything over standard is undesirable
I had a white KC GSD but it was classed as undesirable in breed standard

Re: PIT BULL...
having a dog over standard would be harder to get your dog back i dont want to scare you but that just a fact. I dont have papers for my dogs so i would have prove they not pits.
there was a few kc regsitered dogs in liverpool that was took away and it take them over a years to get their dogs back.

Re: PIT BULL...
Its all so very wrong though, if you have well behaved looked after dogs no matter what the breed, you should not have to fear anything....
So mines 1 inch too big on staffy standard and 1 inch small on pitbull standard so if anybody asks she's a poodle lol

Re: PIT BULL...
if you have a well behave dog i dont think you have anything to fear, it's when you fall out with someone on your street, showing off on a street corner or it's just a nasty dogs.
Re: PIT BULL...
Mambo is far to skinny to be taken as pitbull, although he's much taller than typical staffy. I think some ppl don't even realise he's a staffy type, most just say 'he's got a big head' because it seems not to match the rest of his body. we had situations when ppl saw him from the back and they thought he's a boxer! tho i think he's too small for a boxer anyway.
we live in quite good neighborhood, not the 'street corner type' and a lot of ppl here have dogs (much more than previous city we lived in) so i think the public is used to people walking their dogs here.
but i'm still a bit concerned when we meet some ppl with their dogs - usually collies, spaniel types - who are often really aggressive. Mambo is not aggressive until he sees aggression in the other dog - he's very quiet (no bark, no sound at all) but ready to fight.
I'm afraid that in the situation when other dog attacks Mambo, ours is more dangerous one and it would be considered his fault if anything like that happens and then of course we would have difficulties explaining he's well behaved staffy..

The fact is, she's too tall to be able to 'better' the breed unless she was bred from a small dog - even then, the pups could all be tall.

The breed standard isn't out of date. Pop along to a dog show & see the dogs being exhibited - 95% of them are within the breed standard height and those that are over are only slightly over.

Re: PIT BULL...
One thing i dont understand is this You obtain a pup, you see both parents and you recieve a 5 generation pedigree from the KC that registers your dog as being pedigree and to standard when the dog is approx 12 to 16 weeks old.
How can they register it if after 10 months it no longer fits the standard no one pops round and takes the KC papers off you if your dog is to tall or to small, so what are the papers worth really, the value of the dog is the dog himself when mature and within standard surely
