Hi all staffy problems
Hi all , hope everyone is well !,
Iam a new stafy owner to an 18m old male pied blue and white staffy , called Brock ,
We adopted him due to a family break up he's very soft good with kids house trained and friendly ,
He's been very good with my partner but seems to be trying to dominate me Iam very firm an he dos listen and respond but seems to be a bit boisterous around men,
First couple of nights he wouldn't settle and cried , he seems to be settling now but a little of his food ,
Any tips to help him calm down a bit and settle thanks for any help ,
Rob and Brock

Re: Hi all staffy problems
Hi ya Rob, welcome to the Forum from Flo & me
Was the male figure in his previous home boisterous with him ? If so it may be that he associates that kind of rough and tumble with men. Keep doing what you are and getting him to stop and sit. When he does, praise him and offer a treat.
Give him plenty of attention and he will settle fairly quickly in his new home with you. You could also try leaving him with an article of clothing that has your scent on it, that will also have a calming effect when you aren't with him.
He will eat when he's hungry, Staffies very rarely starve trust me

Re: Hi all staffy problems
A bit of both Rob. Give him attention so that he knows everything is ok but you also want to give him some space too otherwise he could become separation anxious which you really want to avoid.
Is he crated or have his own bed in a quiet place ?

Re: Hi all staffy problems
His owner said he is crate trained, first night we just put his bed in the kitchen he didn't like it so I created a space between under fridge and work top like a hiding hole an he loves it there so don't know if maybe he misses his crate

Re: Hi all staffy problems
I would think that's almost perfect, a nice quiet space with his bed in it. Crates have their uses but I don't use one personally and they should only ever be used as a safe haven for the dog.
It's early days and sounds like you're making good progress. Give it a little time.
If you need any advice just ask, it's quiet daunting taking on a Dog, any dog, so if you're unsure just holla.

Re: Hi all staffy problems
Welcome from Koda & I ! My boy is nearly 2 and he's definately far more boisterous with my hubby than he is me, think he goes to him for a bit of a rough up and me for the cuddles. When he gets too rough or carried away hubby makes him sit and repeats the command until he calms down and does, then makes him give his paw to shake 'hands', it breaks him out of his frenzy and calms him. I agree with the advice above in terms of giving him a while to settle in, no doubt a big change for him and will take some time to get used to. Love to see some pics when you sort your photobucket account and we're here any time you need advice, or just want to share Welcome to mad world of owning a staffy !!!

Re: Hi all staffy problems
Good progress! I have to laugh when i get the same hostile response, you learn to get thick skin because you KNOW they'd lick anyone to death!! On the odd occassion someone has carried on i might have let his lead out a little more so he's a smidge closer to them!

Welcome from me and Misty. Congratulations on the rescue, he sounds like a lovely boy. If you do get any negative comments tell people to look up what the kennel club say about Staffies or look at the Rspca Staffies, softer then you think campaign. X

Re: Hi all staffy problems
Its irresponsible owners that have given our staffies a bad press, you learn a lot from becoming a staffy owner.
1 to have a thick skin
2 become very tolerant of numpties in this world
3 the patience of a saint.

Re: Hi all staffy problems
Hi from me and mine!
Good on you for taking him on, he sounds fab! I would teach Brock a few basic commands, including 'sit', 'leave it' (drop whatever's in your mouth or don't pick it up, whichever is the case) and 'enough' (stop playing). They're all taught with reward based training.
I've explained how to do it in a few different threads, mostly in puppy chat so have a look and see what you can find in there. I will try to find time to pick some out for you later and will post a thread in general chat, so keep an eye out for it towards the end of the day.

Re: Hi all staffy problems
Agree with Ian and others, great advice! And also Liz's post regarding teaching him some commands/boundaries - really important. Regarding the comments of others - every dog is different, and should be treated as an individual. My girl had an awful life before she came here; and I was unsure regarding how she would react to children, but she's been brilliant with my niece from day one - Willow (my neice) adores Bug and cries when she leaves! You sound like you've got your head screwed on, assess his body language around children and if you're really worried have a chat with a positive trainer to get some tips for introducing him to the new born. Again, all dogs are different but Staffies are known for being good with children - not all, of course, but as a breed standard that's one of their listed traits.

Been loving your updates. Sounds like the perfect dog. Ignore the haters, they are ignorant. They have clearly never walked into a farm yard and been met with 6 terriers with NO skills at all and had their ass bit (but thats NORMAL so its ok)
