re what kind of staff do i have?
Hi, your we baby looks lovley. I've always thought that as a pup a staff does'nt really look like a staff. It takes a while for them to grow into there heads lol However i do think that you have a proper staffy the only thing is if it does'nt have papers you cant tell its family tree and as a result is no good for show. Though if its just a family pet your after then it dos'nt really matter. good luck with your pup.

re what kind of staff do i have?
Sorry i forgot to mentiion that even if mum and dad were to staffs and have a litter of pups together if ither dog has had a different litter previously with another dog in the past that can result with the genes from the other dog comming through in any other litter. You cannot let full pedigree dogs bread with other dogs for that reason

Hi scott, I have 2 long legged staffs, I have papers for Kane, But not for Haylo, I know both sets of parents to my dogs, all are ped. staffs, and one of haylos sisters is shorter legged! dont think it really matters, some are just more 'bully' and some more 'terrier', but they all great. Your pup is gorgeous by the way xx

So true, mines long legged too. I never believed it was a "sort" but although no papers appperently its true. It comes under "Irish staff" which is also a trait, just what I have been told with my girl x

as patton says no papers means no showing but also i would not recomend breeding also as there are thousands of staffs in rescue and a lot are pedigree so pups with no papers have a far less chance of going to good forever homes becouse as i say thay are far overbreed as it is

Re: what kind of staffie do i have
Looking at the mum & dad, they're both quite terrier type staffs, so yours probably will be too. So I'd expect him to have moderately long legs (not like a greyhound or anything! ), but only time will tell! Oh, and just because your pup or the parents weren't registered doesn't make them any less staffords! Just means they're not registered with the Kennel Club - a bit of paper really doesn't make a lot of difference!
Sorry, but you're quite wrong there. The genes will not remain in the bitch after the pups have been born, so it won't affect any future matings.

Im not saying that this is so in all cases but there is a posibility of it happening. I have family that breed dogs and show champions, have had alot of experience with dogs and would believe this to be true. Were do you get your information from?

Re: what kind of staffie do i have
Nice pup by the way. When people refer to terrier type it's not a derrogative thing it's just a type. The Staffie being part bulldog and part terrier comes in a wide varierty and some more lean to one than the other. The supposed ideal is a perfect balance between terrier and bulldog - so not too much one way or the other but.... the debate on what is the perfect Staffie has been rageing since well before they were acknowledged by the KC. As the others have said it doesn't matter what they look like they are all lovely - the most important aspect of any Stafford is their temperment.

I've been around dogs for 40+ years & I've bred a couple of litters. Before I went into breeding I did one helluva lot of research. However, the genes of the dog are ONLY passed on to the egg via the sperm, and then only once the sperm has matched up with an egg. They do not even enter the bitch herself, as all the remaining sperm die (together with all the dna/genes etc) and are secreted by the bitch. When the pups are born, they take everything with them!

Absolutely not! There are generally three 'types' of stafford; terrier, middle-of-the-road, bully. They all just depend on the type of build your dog has. My old boy Bandit was a terrier type (I've always had a preference for these!) and he did quite a lot of winning in the show ring. If you get a chance to go to any shows where there are stafford classes have a look at how different they all are - but they're all staffords!! As has already been said, though, the important thing is that you love your dog & he has a good temperament - what else do you need?

Re: what kind of staffie do i have
i think the confusing thing about the dog genes thing is coming about by if a staffy bitch has pups with a differant breed the pups may look a full staffy, but when the pups breed there pups may come with the grand parents genes, and apear a completly differant breed even if they have been breed with full staff, its the same with humans white and black may produce white children but the dark gene may apear in later genarations
Guest- Guest
Re: what kind of staffie do i have
and as been said terrier type is just one type of staffy this in no way makes him any less desirable

Yes, but that is because you are then breeding from a cross-breed. The bitch that had the pups will still be able to mate with a full stafford & produce full staffords because there's no lasting effect (other than pups ) from the mating with the other breed!
Guest- Guest
Re: what kind of staffie do i have
thats what im saying might not be coming across well but the pups from the first breeding may look like full breeds when not and are actully cross breeds sold on as full staffs so when the bitches of that litter breed they may have cross breed pups or full breed pups as the new pups mothers genes can still come through
Guest- Guest
Re: what kind of staffie do i have
i totally agree with caryll that ones the pups our born that is the end of that mating and no dna will be stored in the bitches body to come out in further breedings with a differant dog
its like saying if you been married had a child then get devorced than married again have another child with a new partner and it turns out with your ex partners looks it just dont happen(UNLESS YOU NEVER FULLY GOT OVER YOUR EX WINK WINK)

Re: what kind of staffie do i have
I think what Patton was trying to get at but got slightly wrong is that any female who mates with more than one male in rapid succession and then releases more than one egg can host babies with different fathers in her uterus simultaneously. It happens when one male’s sperm fertilizes one egg and another male’s sperm fertilizes a different egg. This is true for all mammals, including cats, dogs and humans.
Female cats are, shall we say, quite promiscuous. If given the chance, most female cats will mate with several males when they are in heat. Therefore it is quite common for feline littermates to have different fathers.
After dogs mate, they become “tied together” for several minutes. This is an evolutionary adaptation that prevents another male from immediately mating with the female. Canine littermates therefore are more likely to share a father. However, the evolutionary adaptation is far from perfect, and it is not uncommon for puppies in a litter to have different fathers.
Its not that the gene stays in the mothers body......

No he actually says a previous litter, not 2 dogs mating the same bitch within a day or so of each other.

Hi Scott welcome to the Staffy world family, i know what u mean, when my last staffy passed on, i thought i would never get another dog(have a female borjack) but 10 months later after much searching i found my doodlebug Harley, i knew i couldn't live without another staffy in my life. U will never want another breed of dog again.
It doesn't matter if u don't have papers for your little cutie, Nitro never had papers and he was a pure bred staffy yet Harley does(comes from a long pedigree of Aussie champs) but it doesn't mean i will ever love Harley more than Nitro, that will NEVER be the case, Nitro was my BFF. Who cares what others say anyway, s long as u love him that's a;; that matters.

It's actually hard to say how big his head will be, he's still so young. Bandit (his pics on another thread) was very lightweight till he was about 15 months. Then he started to muscle up & fill out.

I don't mean to be disrespectful but I think that may be a bit of an old wives tale.
If a staffie mates with another staffie the result will be be staffie pups, irrespective of what breed either may have mated with in the past. A dog or bitches genetic code does not change just because they may have mated with a dog of another breed in the past.
