Training lead tangles Empty Training lead tangles

Post by Niffer Sun Jul 05 2015, 17:28

Milo has his long 30ft training lead on all the time when he's over the park but trouble is when he runs up to another dog and starts to bomb around and play everyone and everything gets in a tangle and I'm aware that one day the other dog/s will retaliate when they're getting their legs tied up. Any ideas? If I take it off him I know I won't be able to get him back til he's worn out little bugga.

I let go of the lead by the way lol

I tried the 10m training lead and find it awkward to use as well if I feel I need it I just put 2 leads together for double length and leave then . It's still easier to get hold of your dog if you need to but no tangling.

We usually just drop the lead as well.

As above - would usually say to drop the lead. I would just try to stay close and attempt to untangle as they go. Or perhaps train a "stop" command so that you can intervene if they're getting too tangled.

As Rach says, a 'stop' command would be really useful. I personally think it should be in every playful dog's repertoire. It won't work to stop a fight when a dogs in 'the zone', but a command to say 'that's enough' is incredibly useful.

When you say you won't get him back, do you mean recall? If so, that's another training challenge for you!

Hi LizP - yeah the recall as most people will probably experience is absolutely spot on when he's alone on the park - but he'll just dash off if he spots another dog no matter what I shout or say and will totally ignore me. I then have to get over to the other dog as quickly as I can (unfortunately I'm 66 & can't run) - then try and grab him little bugga but he's so fast..maybe I should just hold on to the line and not let him play?
