Sleeping problem
In 6 weeks we are moving to our new house and I want to come up with a way to deter Koda from sleeping on our bed with us. He is on it every night and starts at the bottom then spends most of the night lying across hubby's chest and then from about 3.30am-4am onwards he's on the bed, off the bed, on the bed, off the bed, on the bed … you get the idea. As much as I love having him on the bed it's not working for us now he's bigger and we aren't getting enough solid sleep, we are both going to work wrecked after being awake from the wee hours. In the new house we are installing a fire so I'm hoping he will be happy to sleep in front of that in the lounge, BUT if he doesn't how do I go about stopping him coming onto our bed ? We don't have a crate and won't get one, he does have a bed inside he sleeps on in the lounge while we're watching TV but as soon as we go to bed so does he, if not sooner, if we put that bed in our bedroom he barely touches it and spends all night on/off our bed breaking our sleep. I know it sounds funny and it's cute but we are really exhausted, the past few weeks in particular have been a real struggle for us both

Re: Sleeping problem
Try putting a stair gate up at the lounge door. you can then begin to teach him this is where he sleep at night. x
Re: Sleeping problem
I had a gate here where we are now he smashed his way thru it and damaged the walls and then the next one he jumped over unfortunately (little bugger, trust me to get the alpha male!!). Mite just shut the door and try it, he will prob scatch under it non stop tho. Ahh! Thx tho i will try anything!! x

Re: Sleeping problem
Could try a full length stair gate and not the half sized ones least that way he can still see out of it not like a completely closed door they might also be bit more robust than the smaller sized ones, good luck x
Re: Sleeping problem

Re: Sleeping problem
I would start now Bek. Start leaving him out of the bedroom as soon as you feel you can, he might make a bit of a racket but the neighbours won't have to put up with it for too long and hopefully you can make a fresh start in the new home with a bit more room in the bed

Re: Sleeping problem
Ok so last night was a disaster, we shut the bedroom door and had directed him to his inside bed in the lounge earlier but he wouldn't settle then we heard him all night whimpering for us and woke this morning to find he'd started on the skirting boards !! I can't see how we're going to overcome this Maybe when we move we keep his bed beside ours so he's close but when he hops on ours we keep putting him back on his ?? Guess a few more sleepless tough nites coming up, but can't be worse than it is now ???? Sorry for the rant. Stupid thing is, when OH is away for work etc he sleeps perfectly sound beside me on the bed all night and never moves, think he gets too hot with OH in the bed too hence on/off the bed all night. :/

Re: Sleeping problem
What about getting a large crate, put his bed in it and put it in your room? Marley only slept in his because he took my slippers in there lol so maybe put sumin of yours inside it too? Hope it gets better for you both

Re: Sleeping problem
I personally think it's asking a lot of him to suddenly be separated from you. If it's 'just' that you can't sleep because of the space on the bed, I'd look more towards teaching him to sleep in the same room but on his bed, or have his bed out on the landing/in the hallway or wherever he can still see you but not get on your bed.
And that's not going to be easy, either! I'd do lots of asking him to go to his bed for rewards, then increase the amount of time you're asking him to stay there. I know you've said you won't get a crate, and I agree that closing him in a crate cold would be unfair, but your best bet probably is to spend time crate training him away from the bedroom, then when he'll happily sleep in it during the day taking it to the bedroom.
In the meantime, I'd also see if there's some way to teach him to sleep on the bed quietly. If he moves from the bottom of the bed, kick him off, each and every time (I know it's hard when you're asleep), and when he starts to fidget in the mornings, then send him for a bit of time out on his own.
Is it a daylight thing, that he's waking up with the light? If so, what about blackout blinds?

Re: Sleeping problem
Maybe try everytime he jumps on your bed tell him with a stern tone NO & OFF & pick him up & put him on his bed & then some praise 'good boy, stay'. May have to repeat it many times (probably a weekend test run) but after a while he may get the idea. But the thing is when your OH is't home Koda will still have to sleep in his bed other wise he will go back to his old routine. Good luck!!!

Re: Sleeping problem
I would try having him in room but on his own bed on floor, seems more doable as he is used to it. Gonna be a hard one to break Bek, start as soon as though xx

Re: Sleeping problem
I know putting his bed next to yours will be tough as we tried doing this while our boiler was being changed and Bane couldn't sleep in his usual bed...as soon as I would lay down he would be off his bed and just standing at the bed side until he thought I was asleep and then jump up! Cheeky git!
If you have no luck, what about a stair gate at your bedroom door and his bed on the landing? That way he can see you and may be a little more settled?
They do like their luxury don't they Oh and is he sleeping in the bed under the covers and then being a fidgety *@^$*? Bane used to get in the covers and was such a pain! He'd get too hot and get out then come and scratch at my face to be let back in. I made him sleep on top of the duvet with his own blanket a couple of times and now he's fine with that and no more fidgeting
