Jumping up on people - and children.

Our 6 month old pup Eco loves to play and gets very excited around new people and new dogs. Unfortunately, she gets so excited that she jumps up on people and can be a bit nippy.

Adults are obviously big enough to deal with this, but I am worried about younger kids. When she has jumped on them - it's happened a few times - they obviously get a big fright, generally waving their arms about and shrieking.

I would like her to be able to interact with kids, but is it better to rather keep her away from kids until she's older and a bit more chilled?

Not sure how long it will take to get her to greet people and dogs politely when she gets so overexcited.

There is a 4 year old who lives in our block and he's not used to dogs. Eco has jumped on him a few times. Would it be worth doing asking his mom if we do some training with both of them?

It would be best if you could do some training with experienced children. A child has to learn how to behave around a dog just as much as a dog has to learn how to behave around a child.

My nephew is 3 and is used to dogs and so despite being so young knows how to behave around a dog and him and Bane get along wonderfully. Other older children on the other side of the family have no experience with dogs, get scared, squeal, jump and run away, wave their arms around and it just gets Bane hyped up and want to jump and play even more.

We find that using the ignoring method works best for jumping. When new people come into the house, we ask them to walk past Bane, pay no attention until they have gotten in the house and settled, and Bane is calm.

It takes time but I'm sure she will get there Bane is almost 2 and still struggles to control himself sometimes!

When any person enters your house hand them a treat walk straight past eco get them then to sit down and wait for 5 minutes until you are certain eco is calm get the person to call him tell him to sit and give him the treat. If its possible if you do know any older dog savvy kids get them to visit and repeat this exercise. He will eventually settle i used to arm my visitors before i knew they were visiting. Depending how hyper he gets id use a lead with young kids and do this exercise yourself make sure the kids are sitting down get eco to sit and get the kids to give him a treat. If hes a bit mouthy id advise getting him to take food nicely from your hand before you get kids to feed him.
