jumping up at people
hello to all
ive got a small problem iam sure others might have aswel. first thing i get when i walk through the door is a face full of staffy and half the time i get down on the floor for a role about with him. its the best part of the day just to see how excited he gets.
now i know its all my fault but he wants to do this with everyone,my mum loves it but others dont which i can understand because its not just a quick jump up,he needs at least 5mins to calm down so its got to where he goes in the kitchen for 10min when people come round
any ideas or some sort of training i can do because i feel iam not sorting the problem just hiding it,and i still want to fuss him when i get in. alot to ask i know

Re: jumping up at people
thankyou for that steve
one thing it states though is if your trying to teach your dog not to jump on you but a friend or family member praises him hes never going to learn
i think getting most people to say sit might work because hes a good dog in that sense but the only problem is i love the attention he gives me when i get in,something i would miss very much

Re: jumping up at people
I'm teaching Rocky at the moment not to jump up at everyone, and it is very difficult with so many nieces and nephews wanting to run out and play with him, and definitely miss the attention from all the excitement they have when they first see you, but I give it a few minutes after he has calmed down, listened to me, realised he has to wait for us to initiate when he can say hello and act all crazy for the few minutes from missing us!

Re: jumping up at people
When we first got Bailey at 6 months, he was a whirl wind when people came in to house jumping over furniture, bounding onto laps ect. We were VERY strict with him and people visiting.
On my door I had a notice telling any visitors to ignore dog when they enter the house, turn their back on him if he jumped up and do not give eye contact.
We also ignored Bailey apart from pulling off visitors/furniture ect.
He HATED being ignored and VERY quickly realized if he sat when people came in for a few minutes he would be rewarded with lots of attention without the need to jump up
In fact it was harder teaching the humans to ignore him, as he was so desperate for a fuss.

The link Steve posted and especially the part about ignoring is the only way to overcome the jumping up. i used to love my two fussing me when i got home but it got stupid when we met other people. personaly i dont mind it and like you missed it like mad, but to have a dog that knows not to jump up you have to lead from the front. waiting ten mins and then fussing them up gives you the edge and the control over them. it works wonders and they soon learn what is acceptable. now i find a nice tierd dog snuggled into me each evening even more rewarding than a chaotic greeting (as much as i miss it)
