what age to spay is best ?
Following the loss of my girl Kali earlier this year we finally found an adorable little girl as a new friend fro my 5 year old boy
Bonnie is four months old now, my boy is five and intact.
We have no interest in breeding them so she was always going to be spayed at some point, when I asked my vet about it he said she could be spayed at 6 months which surprised me as I thought it sounded a bit early but it seems its pretty much routine now
I've been doing some reading and there seems to be some opposition to this so I'm looking to hear from others who've been through the same and if any problems were encountered
Bonnie's well being is my only concern here, keeping them apart when she has her first season would be a massive challenge but not completely impossible
I have a couple of months before I need to make a decisions so any advice gratefully received

Re: what age to spay is best ?
I've always heard that letting them have 1 season is best but doing it earlier for females eliminates a lot of possible health problems. There's so much conflicting information online it's quite hard to work out what's right and what's not.
I would go with what's best for you. If you can manage 1 or 2 seasons then I'm sure it wouldn't hurt as she has time to grow and mature, but if you may struggle with having an intact male around, then in the long run could be the best option. Vets seem to want to neuter as early as possible these days.

I had Katy done after 2 seasons, I think its best for their bodies to mature before doing it. Just be extra watchful with an intact male in the house when she comes into season, he wont miss a trick to get to her

Hello! Tricky one as management with two intact dogs during seasons can be very hard on the dogs, but I also don't agree with spaying that early.
Would it not be an option to neuter your male now? So that your girl has time to mature before her spay?

We have just had Misty done now after her second season. Was a bit early then we would have liked as we were going to do it in July to give her three months after her second season but due to her bleeding and what was probably an early pryometra she had to have it done asap.

Id have said after 2 seasons, may be safer to neuter your male to avoid a pregnancy. Have you a friend that may take your male into their home while your dogs in season? It wnt be your male dog you have to monitor it will also be the female dog you may have to keep them in seperate areas of the house altogether and block any escape routes. Good luck
