Help/advise anyone
Myself and my partner are having some real issues with our 6 month old staffy - she does not rest!!! She's a very quick learner and very excitable!!
For example the other day we took her to a puppy play date and she ran about with another dog for an hour and a half non stop! And when we got home she was still going but we could see she was absolutely exhausted but just doesn't stop to even lie down!!
She's 6 months old now and still doesn't seem to know how to settle at all...
Has anyone else ever experienced this or have any tips/suggestions on how we can help show her how to settle??

They are pretty hyper I have to say, but what do you feed her on , sometimes diet has a lot to do with this.

Re: Help/advise anyone
I've had to put her in her crate and she's out for the count. I feel guilty having to crate her bcoz she could be cuddled up and make her own choice to sleep instead of me forcing her! she's on burns adult food - our trainer suggested moving her to the adult food at 6 months

Re: Help/advise anyone
You could try some mental exercise games to see if that will tire Nyla. Some treats in a carboard tube or hunt the treat around the house for example. It might sound simple but if they have to think you'll be surprised.

Hi Harley is very similar to your girl in the fact that he doesnt stop. As a breed in general I think they are all hyper but some more than others to tire Harley mentally we play hide and seek and

Re: Help/advise anyone
Maybe a bit of training to give her a time out period where she can switch off? When she goes to her bed it should trigger a release in her head so that she'll relax and the adrenalin rush will die off and then she'll hit the barrier so to speak and finally flake out.
Re: Help/advise anyone
What about treats? They can have an affect the same way food does.

Re: Help/advise anyone
I can crate her and instantly she will settle and fall asleep which is great but hoped by this age she would settle outside the crate on her own :/ maybe we just need to be firmer and reinforce calm behaviour... And with treats its been chicken and turkey for training. Thanks for all your posts/advice guys!

Re: Help/advise anyone
The mental games and training should help with the energy levels. How often are you walking her. At 6 months she should have 2 walks of 30 minutes each day

Re: Help/advise anyone
We take her to puppy class every week and most wknds we meet with other dogs and go for walks or puppy play dates. Yeh She gets 2 20-30 min walks a day and plays in the garden. I'm 99% sure she's tired - her eyes r usually rolling but the slightest noise or movement and she's off investigate. Just can't find her off switch lol!! Will defo try more training on the settling

Re: Help/advise anyone
Hey guys!
Sorry to bring up this not so pleasant topic - anal glands-
At 8 weeks Nyla had to have them emptied at the vets and they haven't checked up on it since. In the last 48 hours she has emptied a little herself on two occasions and seems to relax a bit afterwards. Could this be a cause of the unsettled behaviour do u think?! I can imagine this must be uncomfortable

Re: Help/advise anyone
Hi i have never heard of anal glands being associated with bad behaviour i guess it affects each dog differently, there are games you can buy at pets at home http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/dog/dog-toys/paw-flapper-dog-game there are other games there too.

Re: Help/advise anyone
Some miscommunication there I think. She's not badly behaved at all. It's her endless energy I'm trying to target. She's great at puppy class, we train at home, plenty of walks, socialising and games at home. We can see she is tired and I am not joking. She will not sit down for 2 minutes. She seems very unsettled. Which has now got me thinking maybe she is uncomfortable/pain

Re: Help/advise anyone
Both really. Last night we took her a walk on the lead down the busy street so she gets used to people and she was great then went to the field for a run about. Most wknds we meet up with puppy pals and I'm not kidding she will run around for about an hour and we take her home and she will not stop but She's absolutely shattered! She gets up and just wanders around and stands and looks at us. I do believe part of it is just being a hyper puppy but surely she would switch off at some point?!

Re: Help/advise anyone
Play with nyla for a while before you want her to settle for the night then perhaps you could say night night and show nyla her bed after a while she should go on her own .

Re: Help/advise anyone
We can say night night to her and she runs upstairs and jumps into her crate (of course have to shut the crate) for the night with her bedtime biscuit. In the living room She has a big comfy bed and i put her training lead on and keep her in her bed n tell her to calm. She will sit there but she doesn't lie Down or sleep lol but she is shattered!

Re: Help/advise anyone
In her crate we don't hear a peep out of her. I don't know how quickly she goes to sleep tho lol
I've tired holding her collar lying next to me but she really stresses out. I've also tried taking all her toys away and keeping everything quiet and lights down low to try n help her relax but she still just wanders around and stands looking at us. Good point about the training lead. Never thought she might associate that with walks!

Re: Help/advise anyone
Gizmo used to do this when he was a lot younger. I'd just slowly pet him and eventually he'd fall asleep. The training classes I did they showed us all this way of stroking that is a calming technique. You take the flat of your hand and slowly stroke all the way from the head right down to the start of the tail and repeat.
there's also one to do with their ears but gizmo will have none of it.

Re: Help/advise anyone
We had this problem when Bane was a pup and now when we visit my parents as he loves to play with their dog and just doesn't know when to stop.
As a pup he would get hyper and then start nipping and barking and generally being crazy, you could tell he was tired but it's like he just didn't want to give up. It got to the point where we would have to put him in his bed and he would be asleep in seconds.
Could you try doing something similar and start using a command? So "Calm" or "settle" or something like that every time she goes to her crate to relax. And then as she picks it up you could expand it to other places?

Re: Help/advise anyone
Ohhh la, sounds like you have a dog with real drive! what people forget is that staffies are working dogs by nature and they have drive to please and feel like they have achieved something. she is a bit young for flirt pole or weight pulling, fly ball etc just yet but you can work that drive out by mental stimulation for the time being. lots of info on the web but hunting treats is a good one followed by a play with a ball as a reward. once over a year old you have tons of things to do from agility to bikejor to satisfy that need.

Re: Help/advise anyone
It's just learning when enough is enough. Like even now when we are at my parents, he will play and run and tease and bark and be at 100 mph until we physically remove him from the situation. After a couple of times of giving him a little time out, he will then calm down and often goes for a nap.
I think it is just the excitement and energy levels at her age She will get there! Training and learning new things is always great for them as suggested above!
