Any Advise? Empty Any Advise?

Post by flowerpower Wed Dec 04 2013, 16:50

Hey everyone! One quick question, how do you manage our staff getting along with kinds and not to jump all over them ? I have two little nephews and I have to keep coco outside as he overExites with happiness but jumps roughly at them. I know he would never hurt anybody on purpose, but I don't know how or what to do so that he can play with kids. Same with other dogs...usually the dogs get tired at him as he is so Active and wants to play at all time and they start barcking and hurting him just to get rid of him, is so sad...
I undertand he is still a pup (9 months) but just wondering if you have any tips o advise we can use.

Thank you all and have a good one!

The only advise I can give is keeping him on lead until calm, even when in the house. Moo was always jumping up but a firm no got her out of it but it does take time Xx

same advise as Janey really, keep him on the lead till he calms down,if you know when they are coming to visit try taking him for a walk before they get there so he is well tired out Smile

I also trained my one dog with leading him in on a lead, it's still a work in progress but he's getting there! Don't let him meet the dog untill he goes in calmly, watch his body language and as soon as he gets too excited just remove him from the situation or tell him a command to snap him out of his excitement - no works well with Ebony Smile

Nothing more to add except let him drag the lead while the kids are visiting so that you have a ready way to grab and correct if he forgets himself. Puppies have short memories but can learn quick with lots of reinforcement. Also, don’t forget to praise and give a treat when he doesn’t jump up or corrects himself. Positive reinforcement is great. Even let the kids give the treat as you really want him to like kids.

Personally, I would keep small kids and the dog apart. Sorry if that's not very helpful. A dog is just a dog - he cant help being full of the joys, that's his job. Even more so for a pup. Especially if the kids are not part of the regular household, every time the dog sees them he will be super-excited, he may not habituate to them very quickly. Plus, small kids need to be taught how to be calm and kind to animals. They're not that way straight out the box. Presumably, Coco is a very friendly boy and not at all likely to use his teeth. However, inadvertently, an excited staffie could knock a small child over, especially one that's a bit tottery anyway. A head injury in this situation could be nasty. Looking at average weight charts for children, my dog is the weight equivalent of an eight and a half year old boy. He's no danger to an older child, but with real youngsters I'm very cautious because of that knock-over factor.  He's friendly, but if he knocks into you, he's like a sack of spuds on legs. I dont work in a rescue, but am aware that most rescues advertise their staffies as being suitable for homes only with older kids. It protects the dog, of course, to not let him get into trouble.
