Post by Mistys Mum Tue May 19 2015, 07:54

Hi All,

Just wondered if anyone has experienced this. Misty came into season the week we got her at the end of February. This lasted 3-4 weeks. We want to get her spayed but we're waiting for three months after the end of her season (which was her second), so we're looking at July for this. However today we have woken up and there are some patches on our bed that look like very watered down blood. She is at her lady parts quite a bit. Could this be another season so quickly? She's not at all grumpy or down, she's acting very normally. Could this be some sort of infection? We are going to book a vets appointment for tonight which I'm not looking forward to as she gets very stressed in the vets.

It could be cystitis, the vets should be able to do a urine sample.

I concur both my last girls had this and it ended up becoming a recurring problem. The discharge was never bloody though. Good luck at the vets and let us know how it turns out

Thanks all. Vets is booked for ten past six. Hubby says he's only seen a tiny amount today but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I've been to the butcher for chicken and sausages, I'm trying to make going to the vets a nice experience for her by feeding her favorites while we are in there.

Ok we are home now. The vets was a very nice experience today-it started off with going in and a gorgeous german shepherd was in the waiting room so Misty started barking so we let her wait with hubby outside. The GS owners could not of been nicer, they both said, as well as the ladies on reception that she only barked as we were in the vets, such nice people. Anyway we get in to see the vet, a different lady to the first two times we went in there. Misty took to her straight away- wanting to nose as what she was doing etc. The vet was FANTASTIC- I felt the last vet we had there was too scared of Misty and wasn't great. This lady was wonderful, kept saying how lovely she was. So Misty did get a bit stressed in the room as the vet had to pick her back legs up and look at her lady bits which she didn't like at all. The end result is the vet is pretty sure its Cystitis but there is a chance it could be something beginning with P ( I forget the exact name now Ive come to write it down) which is basically a womb problem which is serious. If it is that we have to bring forward her spay asap. Misty wee'd in the room so it was a good thing as the vet got a urine sample which has now gone for testing. She has promised to call us if she finds anything alarming. She had given us antibiotics and whatever happens we have to go back next Tuesday to see her. She has made us know that Misty has to go back asap if she shows of the following signs ( she has none at the moment) Lack of appetite/not herself/blood becoming thicker or clots/drinking more.
She was a wonderful vet - Ive requested her personally again - even though she was the only one on today she didn't rush at all. She spent ages questioning us about Misty as her lady bits are slightly big and she wanted to check they haven't become swollen ( they have been like that since we had her, they were much bigger when she was in season). She loved Misty so much she actually asked if she could have some of our chicken to give to her. Fingers crossed its cystis which I do think it is after listening to the vet. The vet has just said she wants to be totally sure its not the other thing. Im so proud of my girl she did great tonight Love Struck

Sounds like a wonderful visit to the vet! Love when you get a good one. All of our nurses coo over Bug too, yet the last vet made her wear a muzzle and was awful with handling her.

It's probably a pyometra that they're referring to, but I wouldn't worry until you get the results back. Fingers crossed and keep us updated!

Thanks Rachel yes thats what the vet said it could be a pyrometra. Hubby has said he is going to be Mistys shadow today instead of the other way round, he will be watching her like a hawk. It was such a nice experience at the vets like you say it makes such a difference when you have one who treats your dog well. She even went to the receptionists for strokes on the way to the vet room and they commented on what a different dog she is compared to when she first went in. They were all over her. It's lovely as I'm not dreading gong back there next week. Fingers crossed it's cystitis. Thanks for everyone's support.

Well, went back to the vets last night and the vets not happy. Misty is still bleeding so the decision was made to give her an emergency spay today. After we decided that hubby took her outside as she was getting bit upset in the vet. She was shaking and wouldn't eat her venison treats that she was gobbling up outside. The vet was lovely, when she was examining Mistys lady bits I was telling Misty that she was only there as the vet likes her so much and there nothing wrong with her. The vet then started saying that she's been looking forward to seeing Misty all day. I'm just so in love with this vet she is lovely, straight away when we get in the room she goes to Misty and sits on the floor just stroking her. Ok I digress. So after hubby takes our girl outside the vet then asks about what flea treatment we used last, I said I'm sure it was Advantage but because I was stressing about hearing Misty had to have her op the next day I wasnt completely with it. Then she says that it's to do with blood not clotting so we had to cancel the spay for today and it's booked for next Tuesday. She will be the vet doing it which I'm very happy with. She also said we can pay for blood tests to be done too so we can find out what's going on. I said yes,do anything you can. She told us if anything changes with her to come back asap and they will just spay her immediately. She said the price will range from three hundred including bloods to up to six hundred if it is a pryometra. I must admit I'm absolutely terrified about next Tuesday. She had said that she wants us to be with Misty for her pre med and then we can leave. I'm trying not to worry as we were never going to breed her and we always planned to get her done late June early July but I can't stop worrying about her. She still doesn't act like there's anything wrong. I really hope this bleeding could be something simple like a tear or something. My poor little girl.

Feel completely sick thinking about tomorrow and my poor little girl having her op. She's been amazing recently meeting other dogs and so happy in herself, you'd never know anything could be wrong. I'm also worrying about her waking up in a cage when she comes round from the op. Her old owners kept her in a crate alot as they couldn't handle her behavior, I'm worried when she wakes up tomorrow she will be so upset. Hubby says she won't even realise as she will be groggy after the op. I really hope that's the case.

Thanks Crystal, yes I'm going to let the vet know. I know what you mean about calling every half hour. I'm already a bag of nerves, I'm not someone who ever cries but Im acting like such a wimp today, keep running to the loo at work as my eyes are filling up. My head tells me she will be fine and the spay will sort everything but I am still worrying. I'm wfh tomorrow so I can be there as soon as the vet rings. We are staying at my parents tomorrow as they have a house two seconds from the vets and they absoutely adore Misty so she can recuperate round there, hubby and I already have our sleeping bags ready to sleep next to her bed. I'm off to the shops after work tonight to buy her new toys. Oh the stress of being a doggy parent!

It's such a worry when they go in for any op Emna. Misty won't know where she is when she comes round so don't fret too much about the cage but worth mentioning when you take her.

Let us know how she gets on.

Hi All,
Well she's gone in now. I spoke to the receptionist and was doing so well until I mentioned my concerns about her waking in a cage then the tears came. Silly idiot! The receptionist was so lovely when I was apologising for getting upset. I pulled myself together and after the paperwork was done we bought Misty in to get weighed. She was so funny, we coaxed her into the vets and she stepped on the scales. A lady vet we have never seen before took her weight and Misty loved her. Might have had something to do with the nurse constantly saying how pretty and clever she was! Then Misty was so proud of herself she lead us to the door as if to say, come on people I've done what you wanted let's go! So we managed to persuade her into the vets examining room, hard to do with no treats, but we did have two of her toys with us. The vet came in and was lovely as usual. We held her while the vet gave her three injections. When I asked the vet if she could take her two toys for her when she woke up and the tears came again. The vet was lovely and said she's in good hands, not to worry and then she said Rachel (helping with surgery) loves Staffies, she had a real soft spot for them. So of course that made me smile. The vet was going to take her bloods first and ring us if anything bad shows up and she can't be spayed. Fingers crossed no phone call yet thankfully. We have to ring them between one and half one. So obviously at exactly one o clock I shall be on that phone.

Hi Ian, yes and it's great news. The vet rang us at twelve to say all was well. There was an abnormality in her womb but it's all been removed now and she has just woken up and her tail is wagging, but she couldn't give us a time to collect and to call them at half one. I called them and we can pick her up anytime after three. She had been for a little walk and had a bite to eat. To say I'm relieved is an understatement. We are going to collect her in fifteen mins and will find out more about after care and this abnormality they found but I'm not worried as vet said she is ok now. I have aged ten years today but I'm over the moon now. I'll update again after we get her.

Thanks all. Well my little girl is one tough little cookie. When we went to pick her up we wanted to ask exactly what the abnormality was but of course when we saw her that went out of our minds. She is due back this Friday and next for post op checks so will ask then. It was an awful sight seeing her yesterday, she was actually shaking when we put her in the car. Thankfully it's a very very short trip to my mum's so we took her in and put her to bed straight away. However, as I'm sure you all know our little fur babies are very stubborn. She simply would not  give in and sleep. She sat in her bed with a very sorry little expression on her face and was sat upright fighting the urge to sleep. Poor little thing, her eyes were closing but she wouldn't stop trying to stay awake. Eventually she gave in after about an hour and had a sleep. I did wonder if we should have put her in the back room where it's completely silent. Obviously we were not making noise and were whispering with the tv on very quietly but I did wonder if she would like silence. My dad said no as she's not a dog like that, she likes to know we are here. Misty herself answered that question later that evening. Hubby and I were outside in the kitchen preparing her dinner of plain chicken and my dad was upstairs. Suddenly hubby says to me , i think you better go back into the front room now. I turn around and see Misty stood at the kitchen door like something in a horror film, she was just stood there with an expression that just said, I really can't believe you two, first you don't feed me ANYTHING this morning, then you dump me at some horrible place where they give me medicine to make me feel Ill. Then you pick me up, again FEEDING ME NOTHING, and now you don't even want to sit in the same room as me. Wow you two are the worst people ever. Seeing that face I went straight back and sat with her. She had a wander around the room about nine pm last night. At two am this morning we were both woken up by her very vigorous kisses. It was all we could do to stop her jumping and running about. She was back to herself. She was going crazy with the kisses. It was lovely to see. She stayed up on and off till about seven this morning. My parents came down and just said they couldn't believe her, just looking at her you would never know she had an op. She is such a lovely girl, I was a tiny bit worried she might be a bit off with us for taking her there but I shouldn't have worried. Now the only issue is how to keep an excitable little girl quiet for ten days with no jumping up, no running, and very very minimal walks. This could be the hardest part!So happy to have her back home and the lovely personality we adore is back. Love Struck

Don't they just melt yer heart Love Struck

The shivering is a normal reaction, not sure whether it's because they don't feel right after the anesthetic but sounds like Misty tolerated it well Smile

You are quiet right Emma, the hardest part is going to be stopping her from tearing around like a loon Laughing

So pleased she's all ok and getting back to her normal self.

Resilient little pups, aren't they? You might want to invest in one of those multiscarves as modeled by IanW's Iza to stop her chewing...
