sleeping too much? Not eating ?
hiya, im prob jus worryin about nothing here, but i jus wanna b sure lol.
Jemma seems to be sleepin pretty much all the time, is this normal?
im puttin it down to it being wht she wud normally b doin if she was still in kennels, but im unsure.
also, at the kennels so was on dry food called gusto, which they soaked in water, but she hasnt been interested in it since shes been home. i have 2 cats, who are on wet food, i think this may b the reason she doesnt want her dry food. i tried addin a lil wet food to her gusto, and she eats it fine.
does this mean i am goin to have to feed her a wet/dry diet??
Any advice plz!!

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
You could try it just to whet her appetite, and then when she's settled in, change her to whatever is more convenient for you.

I guess she is just settling in, how was she when you used to have her for the day? Its all new to her and she has recently had her op, also this warm weather can be draining on them.

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
Good point, I forgot she's only just been spayed, hasn't she? She's probably still a bit stiff & sore from that.
If she's happy & bright eyed (when she's awake!) don't worry. There's always a settling in period, and they all cope with it differently. This is probably just her way of adapting.

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
Maybe she just doesn't like dry food? It could be that she ate it at the rescue place because there was nothing else, but now she wants you to give her something else?
By all means try her with the wet, but be prepared for her not wanting to go back on dry at a later stage! If you do want to change back, you'll have to just put it down & if she doesn't eat it, take it away until next meal. Sounds cruel, but that's the only way.

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
I was on a wet dry mix to start off with with Moo, I used Royal Canin, its very good but also quite expensive. I have now changed her onto dry kibble James Wellbeloved and she is doing really well on that. I had quite a few issues with her but she's doing great now Xx

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
I would'nt worry at this point in time. She's probably just settling in and getting over the op. It could be a bit for her to deal with.
If it puts you at ease a bit.....my Roxy had her moments when she would leave her dry food. Roxy now gets a mix of dry / wet and it suits her well. Like Caryll said...she may not like the dry food. It also comes down to what you are happy to feed her ( providing it is healthy for her )
Give her some time to adjust and i'm sure she'll start eating soon. With the sleeping, you say runs around a bit and that she perks up when you take her for walks.....sounds ok to me

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
hello,
jus tried her food again, gusto with a lil water, but she turned her nose up at it.
however, wen i put a lil meat in it she started eating it, but mainly jus picked out the meat.
i dnt like the idea of soaking her dry food in water in the morning, leaving it down for a while, then pickin it up if she doesnt eat it. i dnt want her to be hungry..........

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
I wouldn't normally advise tinned food because it isn't very good for their teeth. Have you thought of giving her raw meat? I'm not talking about the full BARF diet with bones and all, just raw meat.
A lot of people feed a raw meal in the mroning & then a dry meal at night & it seems to work well.

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
With my 2 I buy different meats and fish and I cook it (bad mummy) just a little bit of the meat or fish along with the stock I mix into james well beloved (love that food) and as soon as I put it down its gone
If im giving them raw I will feed on its own as a treat my 2 have certinely come to no harm and im never worried that they are not eating so it works for me

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
Just remember that raw meat only takes about 4 hours to digest, whereas dry commercial food takes about 17 hours! That's why you should feed raw in the morning so that there's plenty of time to finish the digestion before the evening meal.

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
Yes I give raw on its own only as treats and hours before a meal usually first thing and I mean first thing im usually up about 530am then they have a feed after work around 3-4 pm depending on were Iam if im home a bit earlier

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
Moo was wet/dry. Its fine, and as you say suppliment it with chews. The only thing I will say is last time I went to the vets she said there was a build up on her canin. Nothing to worry about but because biscuits and the odd bone only really help the back teeth with cleaning (hope that makes sense) she suggested cleaning them. I haven't yet but something to be aware of Xx

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
A dentastick thingy doesn't clean the cainins just the back teeth. Its nothing to worry about just something to be aware of. There are so many options. Feeding raw just doesn't suit me personally, but there are benefits. Feeding wet/dry is great too. You need to get Jemma eating first, then take things from there

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
It really does depend on what food your feeding. I don't know anything about gusto. On Royal Canin she had 1 a day, half in the morning mixed and then half in the evening. But I had looked into other wet foods (supermarket brands as thats all I thought of till I ordered over the net) and they would reccomend for her weight 2-3 cans a day. Whats Jemma on? Xx

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
What are your options? Are you going for supermarket brands/ vet brands etc. You just need to find a food that suits her, that she is happy on, and that can be trial and error. With a complete food like your on ie dry (gusto) and you want to use wet then generally that brand will do a mixer. You've gotta find what suits you and her, and remember things are all new so if she is off food for a bit don't worry, she won't let herself starve Xx

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
over here we can buy a type of dog food that is in a 3 kg roll.. like polony.. you just cut off a section and cut into pieces. My boys prefer this over tinned food anyday... do you have anything similar over there? Maybe that might tempt her...

Re: sleeping too much? Not eating ?
i spoke to the vet today re her not eatin and they suggested leavin her food down for 30mins in the mornin, (gusto) and if she dnt eat it pick it up, thn put it down again at tea time for 30 mins, aparently she will eventually eat it, althugh it may take a few days

Saw our JRT do exactly that. For some reason he started playing games at meal times and not eating his food. So we put it up or Kita would have eaten it and he soon learned that unless he ate when given food, he would go hungry. I felt really mean and much happier when he did

ideally i want her on the dried food, as its meant to be better for thm or summit.
shud i still wet it first, or leave it dry as otherwise i will be throwin away alot of food every mealtime

If you want her on dry then start her on dry, see how she goes, if she is still being fussy, try another dry food with her, I moisten Moo's food occasionally just for a change but she'll eat it either way
