15months, Acting frantic!
Hello,
I have a 15month un-neutered male stafford, a 15 week old female stafford and a 4 year old spayed bully mix female. Just in the last week and a half my male is acting frantic, acting like he needs outside, panting and restless, has tried to run out side and away a few times. This happens every day. My older dog went to stay at my moms for a few days and came home today. My male wants to constantly lick her all over and mount her (sexually) as if she was in heat. He just wont settle, constantly panting and wont leave the older dog alone. It's possible there is a female in heat near our house, as there are many dogs around. I'm unsure what to do? I don't know if this is normal? Any similar experience and advice is appreciated. This is driving us mad!!!

I think you need to take him to the vets, personally. Possibility about the season, are you planning to get him neutered before your pup comes into first season?

I'd advise a trip to the vet as well just to be safe. It could very well be a female in heat though

He is medically fine. I work at a Vet and am a certified Tech. The Dr's and others who have had intact dogs think it's teenage hormones and a possibility there is a female in heat near by. Here in the USA we are very pro spay and neuter, so most of the dogs I encounter are spayed and neutered, or we don't live with them so we never see or hear of these problems while in for a check up. As far as neutering him, no not any time soon as I am showing him and am working towards his grand championship. The female pup is also to show and will not be spayed for a while either. This is the first male dog that has been intact, I have owned, so this is new for me. I have had females go into heat and have handled that. I just was curious if anyone with intact males have encountered this with this breed!

Re: 15months, Acting frantic!
I've only ever had girls. At 15 months he very likely is entering into the teenage phase and will be prone to wanting to assert dominance (which could explain the humping) as well as reverting back to undesirable behaviour in general. This includes wild sporadic moments of running around the house and generally being a goof ball once or twice a day.
This is commonplace and nothing to be overtly concerned about. The only other questions I would have to reduce the behaviour is how much exercise and mental stimulation are you providing? A tired dog is a good dog and they will get the energy out one way or another. Also what are you feeding him? A low quality food can also contribute significantly to behavioural issues similar to a child hyped up on sugar.

Re: 15months, Acting frantic!
This is probably why I have always owned females too, hahah. Yeah, Im thinking he is being a "teenager" because now he is choosing not to listen well, he now seems to have some anxiety now as well (or having a "fear" stage) He is just a hot fricken mess!!!!. I hope this passes soon, it's really starting to bother me. I feed quality food with a low carb. index and am careful with the amount of protein as well. I do not give treats other than some meat, or dog food. I just really want this to pass or he is going to get neutered and that will end his showing!

Re: 15months, Acting frantic!
The neutering will not really help because the hormones will still be in his system for some time. It's a phase they all go through and that we all reach the limits of our patience on occassion. The best thing to do is to go back to basic obedience training and not let him get away with undesirable behaviour.
For Suki her phase lasted 2 months or so
