How much food to feed him? Empty How much food to feed him?

Post by Sealpig Fri Mar 13 2015, 17:35

So Rio is currently in the care of my other half's (adam) mum and stepdad. They feed him half a can of dog food and 2 cups of dry food a night. (And a slice of buttered toast in the morning which i've stopped them doing as i don't think he should be eating stuff like that)

I feel like this isn't enough for him, he weighs, at an estimate, between 25-30kg, he's a big boy and likes going for long walks. In the lake district he wolfed down a whole can, i was hesitant to give him more can food as i know they have a high fat content but he snubbed the dry food.

Any recommendations of certain brands of dry food/ canned food and how much you think he should be getting?

I'll ask the vet when we get him registered in Gosport, but thought i'd find general opinion here Smile

EDIT: Sorry can this be moved to the nutrition bit, didn't realise i was on the RAW topic, thanks!

Hey! I'm on my phone at the moment, but hopefully someone will be along to move this soon.

What are you currently feeding? As a general rule - the better the quality of the food, the less you have to feed. I would never feed anything that you can buy in a supermarket! Personally, I feed Nature Diet with a few raw meals thrown in during the week - mostly fresh tripe, lambs hearts, meaty bones etc and the odd raw egg/fruit/veg/can of oily fish.

Here is a link to some good dry foods

http://staffy-bull-terrier.com/dry_food

Thge amount we feed depends on how Suki looks and how much energy she has spent during the day. A 7-10 mile walk and she gets a bit more. In the summer we feed a little less becuase the heat makes long walks hard

Eukanuba is a good food, guess is depends on your price range as its quite expensive. I feed Fishmongers finest which is cheaper and has more protein than Fish4Dogs. Sometimes throwing in raw veg and he often has fruit for snacks. Canned food is mostly made up from water anyway and god knows what meat it is...I personally stay away from it. Any dog will choose the tinned food over dried biscuits! Dry dog food will have guidelines on the back of the sack. If your going for longer walks then add a little, if its a hot day then take a little out.
