i wouldn't bathe the dog too often you are only mean't to bathe him 2x a year have you tried an alternative such as dry dog shampoo?. i would also seek advice from another vet as this could be medical and could easily be treated.

Smells that bad are usually infections or parasites. It needs vet attention so id advise going to another vet!

Bane has a dust mite allergy and it affects his ears the most. When it starts getting bad he starts to smell a bit cheesy, so as above maybe it is some kind of infection?

Sounds like a yeast infection perhaps? Go back to your vet, if they can't find anything first time they need to investigate/test? Also Crystal is right, frequent bathing will probably make it worse. Bug gets bathed probably 4 times a year!

Re: dog stinks been a year help
my retriever has this problem to and its worse certain times of the yeat more when he gets hot, something i just have to live with, as his food has been changed few times as well, i stopped bathing him as much and it has helped, also what really really helped was bathing him in apple cider vinegar, i definitely recommend giving that ago
Re: dog stinks been a year help
I'd go to another vet. Pretty poor that they can't find the problem. And I echo what's been said, don't bathe too often (your dog, I mean). That can destroy the natural oils and dry the skin, leaving it open to infection, which sounds like what might have happened. I never bathe Bo, he's never been near water unless it rains or he falls in the duck pond and he has a beautiful smell like new car seats, aside from his feet which smell of Rich Tea biscuits.
I guess before you take him to the vet you can look for yourself. See if you can identify where the smell is worst, and examine his skin for infection. Check his mouth, ears and anal glands too, although it's unlikely to be these if it improves after a bath. Make sure you check between his toes, in any folds of skin and under his arms / legs. Clean his ears and between his toes and any bare skin with non-scented baby wipes.
Most of all, tell your partner to be patient. When health problems occur it's up to us as owners to sort them out, not give up and abandon our dogs. It's not their fault when they get ill (although if Bo eats just one more piece of cat s**t and squirts it out his butt then I might change my view on that).

Re: dog stinks been a year help
I agree with Rachel, sounds like a yeast infection. my girl laska had a very mild infection and she would just chew her back feet until they were red. cut out all carbs as that turns to sugar and feeds the yeast. took about a week and she was all fine after that. bathing is the wrong thing to do as you can create a smelly dog with a poor coat as they try replenish all the oil your washing away. I bathe mine twice a year when they are blowing their coats to help loosen the dead hair. must say I have heard alot of fantastic reports of apple cider vinegar like kattie mentioned, personaly if it was me I would give that a try first
