Need advice please.. upset tonight
Tonight has been such a mix of emotions took Harley for a walk and I was so happy he was walking to heel and I only stopped once or twice for pulling I was so happy then we got back and he was like a different dog I got him some treats and started to dry him with a towel he was fine then he tried humping me then when I went to grab his collar to put him in time out he turned and bit me a few times on the arm bruising me. I shouted no and tried to walk away but he kept lunging and jumping up biting me. I'm so worried he's going to be aggressive its my first ever dog so I don't know if this is normal for a nearly 7 month old. He tries to hump us but we always put him in time out but tonight he just went mad and kept jumping at me. Any help or advice I would appreciate. Thanks

Oh no Beth. I doubt very much that it was proper aggression, I wonder weather he was over excited and simply didn't control his self. I'm no expert here as I've only had girls, hopefully others will be able to give you some advice and reassurance.

Re: Need advice please.. upset tonight
Probably he got excited when you were drying him. Bo goes a bit mad after he's been dried (like tonight) and whilst he doesn't make contact with his teeth he'll snap like mad just in front of my nose and lunge back and forth. It's nothing to do with aggression, it's just him wanting to play.
Actually, once he misjudged and did bite my nose. It didn't hurt but he was so shocked he sat down immediately and put his ears back, then licked at my hands by way of apology

I also think it's excitement from getting dried. If you need to put him in time out and you're worried about grabbing him, give him a firm no and you leave the room.

I would also say overexcitement. Maybe add an extra session of obedience training at home so he gets used to follwing commands. We have Suki sit and wait before every meal.

Re: Need advice please.. upset tonight
Ive been told by a few dog trainers years ago when prince was his age, when he bites or mouths to grab his collar and pin him to the ground until he stops, however it didnt work on prince haha, but he was only ever aggresive because he has possesion problems, he was my first dog and hes been the hardest to train, hes now 14 and still can be a bugger, if hes biting hard enough to bruise and not just mouthing I would try the collar thing trainers told me, prince use to bruise me then it started becoming that he would draw blood, I did all sorts of training classes and behaviourists but it was useless, however as hes got older hes got alot better

I think its over excitement but threy need to learn its not acceptable, Baxter used to bite hard until we were advised by a very experienced Staffy owner to take a firmer stance with him we used to grab him by the collar and put him in time out, the biting has reduced to mouthing now but only when he is really excited.

Thankyou everyone for the advice and recomendations. Please to say he has calmed down for now with the biting we are using the nothing is for free method and using a can with
coins in giving it a little shake when he tries to bite hard.

Have you taught him 'leave it'? If so, try that with the biting, then give him a reward for leaving it.
I've not had this problem but instinct is telling me to be wary of upping the ante too much with an excited dog who has his jaws round your arm, for whatever reason. Excitement can turn to something less nice with the right (or wrong!) motivation. I'd try to avoid strong punishments such as pinning and see if you can redirect his attention to something more positive instead.
Have you taught him 'leave it'? If so, try that with the biting, then give him a reward for leaving it. You can work on the 'leave it' using a tuggy toy so you are getting some excitement going but still controlling when he lets go.
I'd also agree with upping the basic obedience stuff you do at home, just to set a framework for behaviour. It can make life easier for the dog as well as for you.

Not sure I'd use fairy in case it went in the eyes... but water yes.

Re: Need advice please.. upset tonight
Really sad to see such aversive methods in this thread - pinning, collar grabbing!! What is this, the 1940's?!?!?! We've come so far with research into behavioural modification methods - yes, you have a strong willed and stubborn breed, but they're not wired up any differently to any other dog. Teach them what you want them to do!! Figure out why they're carrying out the behaviour that they are. Train reliable commands with positive reinforcement and use them to teach your dog what you want them to do, redirect behaviour that is not suitable in a human household (behaviours that are completely natural to dogs, btw) walk away from and ignore unwanted behaviour, time outs can work! "Train with your brain, not with force!"

And I would also like to add I didn't spray it anywhere near her face really just in her direction she snapped the 1st time probably tasted horrible and now if she has a naughty day I just have the bottle with me and she sees it and stops what she is doing x

No I know Hun. Even if you was you're entitled to your opinion ;-) I know what works for Lexi and so I use those tools and I assume every1 else does the same but I agree I think pinning down is harsh. And IMO when Lexi is playing up. Even saying no is a reward for her she wags her tail lol ignoring Lexi gets to her most x

Re: Need advice please.. upset tonight
Every dog needs a slightly different combination of training, but I've worked with hundreds in kennels, mostly bull breeds, and have never had to pin a dog down or collar grab them to get them to listen to me - just need to find what motivates them to work with you! Bug likes the no too, any attention is good attention! She has various "negative" commands - leave, off, enough etc. She just gets MEGA praise for doing it and then I give her something more productive to do! She has lots of kongs lol! They're mega sensitive dogs, proper little love bugs too.. Ignore them and their world has ended!!
